[need help] rebuilding my gaming rig

Thread Starter
hey guys,

need help for my gaming rig build. to cut the long story short, recently i had to sell my asus maximus gene-z (non gen3). so for now, this is what i got on hand:

  • I5 2500K
  • gskill 4gb (will be upgraded a.s.a.p)
  • gigabyte 580 soc
  • super flower golden king 550w
  • fractal define mini
  • noctua d14 (might want to change to something smaller)

that said i need a new motherboard and ram. i found used asus maximus gene-z gen3 but maybe i should get z77 motherboard just for the sake of it? i do mild oc (4.0ghz daily).
i prefer a matx board so i don't have to change my pc case. but, it's not final, i can sell my mini and find another one. it's just that i fell in love at the first sight with the case and suddenly i got bored tongue.gif
the reason i want to change the noctua is it's too big so i can't put the gpu in the first slot, i need the pcie slot for soundcard, or maybe someday i'll sli my 580.

for the budget, well tbh, lower is better i suppose. might want to balance price and performance smile.gif

Sell the Noctua, and buy a smaller, cheaper cooler.

Okay, some help please. Which way is the Noctua too large?

me thinks he's mounting it 90 degrees the wrong way?

it doesn't matter whether i mount it vertically or horizontally, the gap between the heat sink and my gpu backplate is just a few millimeters. it makes me slightly uncomfortable frown.gif

Get a full tower case and an atx mobo. If you want your 2500k to be stable at high overclocks or during long gaming sessions then you need the noctua. Don't ditch it. Get a z77 mobo, full tower case, 1600MHz 1.5 Volt 8gb ram and you are good to go. Also keep saving money and then go for higher wattage psu. You will want to sli down the road and then the psu will come in handy. thumb.gif You might not overclock your cpu today but after one-two years you will need to and then you will miss your noctua, so don't ditch it. smile.gif Full tower case will also have better airflow.

That is the point of micro ATX rigs, very close quarter, millimeter gaps, and loving every bit of not being huge.

ok, so the noctua will stay biggrin.gif
any suggestion for z77 budget board? or should i just buy a z68 board? i know the price difference is not that big, but a z68 can run IB processor too right? (with bios update) i just think maybe i can find cheap used z68 board...or buy an asrock boards (extreme4)

yeah maybe that's true but the only reason why i buy the gene-z for the first time is because it's just fit my budget, that's all. and then i bought the define mini just because i thought i should put a matx board in a matx case. yeah stupid me. tongue.gif
