After weeks of dealing with a retail price that put their HD 7970 in a no-win position against the GTX 680, it looks like AMD will finally cut their flagship card’s price.

Sweet.
Hopefully this results in a nice cascade effect.

Interesting...a 7970 for $470-490, with a 7950 costing ~$450. Seems too close together and looks like some major price adjustments will be needed for all of the higher end 7000 series. And whatever happened to the 1.5gb 7950 and 1.5gb 7890?
If the 7970 is getting a price cut, the rest of the line will follow suit. That's about a 10% price cut, so should expect the rest to follow shortly, even though Nvidia still hasn't announced the rest of the 600 series lineup. Got the high-end and lowest-end covered, but nothing in the middle.

In time for a $700 7990 (I wish) tongue.gif

sounds a bit different than the article on kitguru, but the general theme looks promising.

@venomblade: the 1.5GB 7950 and the 7890 won't ever surface. there is no price or performance room for such cards. a stock 7870 is already priced at the formerly speculated price of the rumored 7890 and performs just below, on par with and sometimes better than a stock 7950. only thing to do is lower prices.

A $470 7970 would definitely be a better buy than a $500 GTX 680. Looks like AMD is falling back on their price/performance position in the marketplace...
AMD will have to cut prices across the board so I'm eager to see how this turns out.. Even with 4gb non-reference 680's, the 7970 with this price drop still would hold tons of value (I'm guessing non-reference 4gb 680's will be atleast $550). Nvidia won't lower their prices I don't think... not this early, so AMD will be great price/performance for sure.
