This!

The pixeldensity on the 30" is way to low!

For 30" you need higher resolution than 2560x1600.

I want 30'', not 27''.

If I was going to get 27'', I'd bite the bullet and get that Samsung, even taking the resolution hit. 120HZ and a IPS like panel is way to tempting. Those Korean ones I saw, are very luck of the draw, and it's expensive shipping back and forth if you get a bad one. They are like the lotto. Not worth it in my opinion.

They seem to be fairly consistent as long as you get one from a good seller and pick the correct of the many variations. To top that, most of em do at least 100hz.
But a 30 inch would be better, not matter what. How much more you want to spend for this small bit of "better" is your choice though.
They also sell 30 inch versions of the korean monitors for ~800 bucks instead of the 1000 or so you'd spend at dell or HP, although peace of mind is very likely worth ~200-300 dollars more.

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago; I had a 24" or so Asus monitor (16:10), and was tired of not seeing accurate colors. The 27" U2711 wouldn't be that much of a size/resolution increase (I forgot which one) for me, and it was 16:9.

The key to getting the U3011 at a good price, if you do have your eye on it, is to look out for the periodic sales, as well as when a refurbished batch is on sale. You can go on slickdeals.net and create a custom notification so that whenever a thread is made w/ the keyword "U3011," you'll be notified about it.

Having a steady job for quicker moolah is also a major plus, of course. tongue.gif

Plan on getting a new graphics card too? Your 470 will struggle with 2560x1600; my two 6950+70's struggle @ max on 2560x1440.

Course I have the money.

But dropping 1300$ on a 30'' Monitor when I could get like a 120HZ 60'' LCD TV for that price...course with bigger pixels and whatnot...and only supporting 1920 x 1080 tongue.gif

Just saying, despite the pixel increase and the IPS tech...blech.

And yes, I was looking at those Korean ones, but it IS total luck of the draw, everything in that thread showed most people spending hundreds just shipping it back and forth.

And yeah, I was planning on snagging a 780 later this year. And it's not like I'd always be running 2560 x 1600, depends on the game, you know.

Well, it's up to you in the end, and your personal preference. I will say, though, a 1080P television of any kind will look shameful next to a 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 monitor. I have a rather pricey 52" television which I bought for movies and television mostly, but I've gamed on it before. It didn't hold a candle to my 23" AW2310, and my Catleap Q270 (Korean 2560x1440 monitor) blows it and anything I've ever seen out of the water. For computing, you pretty much want around 100 pixels per inch or it'll look like junk, which is why don't don't really see any 24"+ 1080P monitors -- they're not even worth trying to sell. A television though, would have crazy input lag and terrible ghosting no matter how much you paid, in comparison to most monitors.

These are all the reasons 2560x1440/1600 is so expensive, though. It's simply a pleasure to use this resolution.
I gotta say though, you should take a second look at the Korean monitors. There are zero defect options that you can look at for ~$50 more, like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-YAMAKASI-CATLEAP-Q270-SE-27-LED-S-IPS-Monitor-Zero-Defect-Perfect-Pixel-/330706110921
For the sake of 3" and a 140 pixels of vertical height, you can save hundreds one of these and get the kind of experience very few have, and most pay $1400 for.
Here's a side-by-side view of my 23" AW2310 and 27" Catleap, just to give you an idea.

3'' more for that price still seems pretty meh. Your 23'' next to it doesn't look all that difference and mine is 24'', so even less. Though the color quality you're showing there is quite nice. The levels look proper. I notice a pretty decent amount of bleeding at the edges though on the Catleap.

Honestly, you seem terribly misinformed. In the "korean ips" threads, 90%+ of people are getting "perfect" monitors. The few people that are getting DOAs do pay to ship it back, but the seller reimburses that cost. Lastly, you keep comparing real, good monitors, to terrible TVs.

You cannot compare a true 120hz TN panel from a good company, or a 1440p IPS, to the price of Plasma TV that has terrible picture quality. I tend to buy a new monitor every year, and while I wish the tech would advance faster, it is moving forward quite a bit, from year to year.

Edit: On the subject of advancing panels. LG is "supposed" to have a 120hz IPS out later this year. Another company is supposed to be showing a 4K x Something, res monitor, also later this year.

Plasma looks better than any LCD Tech I've seen, IPS screens included. 4k Res monitor I can live without, that won't be playable for quite a few years on current GPU's. I hooked my PC up to my 50'' Plasma and it looked amazing, stunningly smooth, no input lag, no blur, no ghosting, ect. But I can't do that all the time as it's in a different room. I was just saying.

Yes, the pixel density is something to be concerned about.

I don't see why there can't be a 120HZ, 30'', 2560 x 1600, 2ms or less LCD / LED, for 800$ or less. These prices have been stagnant far to long.
