Budget of $400 for a good all round headphone

Hey guys,

In the market for a new set of cans and I am hoping to find something that is of audiophile quality but still performs well in games. I love the K/Q701s but I am not sure a reference headphone is going to be for me as I really like impacting base! The headphones will be run through an STX as a pre-amp and will be getting a dedicated amp shortly (matrix m stage or similar).

What are your recommendations??

Audio Technica M50s. I think $400 is a bit much for headphones. The M50 are definitely audiophile quality. More than $400 you're getting into studio headphones.

A few questions to help us, help you:
over ear? in ear? on ear?
any specific brands you like / dislike?

Note: Please tell me you're using FLAC / WAV ?

Anyhow, games like BF3 will sound nice, it has a good audio engine. But you don't need $500 headphones to enjoy it tongue.gif

I prefer over ear or on ear but def not in ear.

I do like the audio technicas along with Beyers, AKGs and some Sennheisers.

I just want something that is going to perform true when listening to FLAC etc as well as sound great when gaming.

I dont mind using some EQ to enhance short comings in bass as long as I know the headphones I get can do it!

The K/Q701s are suppose to be 'the same', but apparently folks are hearing that there is a bit of a difference between them; that being, the q701s are better. The problem with this set up is that you need a good amp to power them. I don't know if the STX is good enough for them. Someone else should be able to tell you. Like, even the Fiioe7/9 combo isn't enough for them (to get everything worth wild out of them at least).

You can also look at the Denon AH-D2000s. That'll give you a solid bass. I'm not sure on the soundstage though...they might not be that great for gaming cans. But how much bass do you actually need? I was told the shure 940s wouldn't be enough, but they do bass just how I like it...just wish the high end was a bit more forward (equalizer did the trick though).

Buy a pair of XB500 to get your impact fix.

I own the Q701s and XB500s and whenever I want to get some impact in, over and above EQing of course, I swap in the XB500s.

Oh, and don't forget a ~$1.50 headphone cable extension accessory.

If you would like a happy medium, maybe some Beyer 770 250ohm'ers.

You've not heard expensive headphones, huh?

There's a lot more to be desired in headphones than what M50s can provide. Hardly audiophile grade.
