Dodgy router, would like some assistance.

Hey there,

I have an odd problem with 'my' (technically not mine but the land lord's) router, what happens is that every minute like clockwork the ping will spike to 200+ between me and the router and I have no clue what is causing it at all, and seeing as I am an avid gamer I hate my ping spiking so often... I have rebooted it through the routers gateway (silly landlord using default passwords tsk tsk...) but I do not actually have access to the physical device to power cycle it.

Do you have any idea what is causing it / how I can fix it?

(I am literally sitting here watching cmd with a stopwatch timing the spikes and I kid you not, they are a minute apart >_> )

You might need to put foil around the routers wireless emitter to boost quality. However, this is illegal, in the U.K. anyway.....
Also, you may need to call the ISP and confirm the settings in the router with the settings that are required for a good connection between the router and the ISP. Talk to the lanlord and offer your help with this situation so you can take control on fixing the issue.

What kind of router is it?
Time based would lead me to believe there is probably some crappy cron job on that router that might be resolved by using a different firmware, if available.

Is that actually illegal? wow... If so I am a crook seeing as I did that when I was living in the U.K...
Thing is I'm hoping that there is a fix that doesn't require me talking to the landlord through the estate agent as well the agent pretty much tore me a new one when I mentioned I gamed online and that the internet is only for 'study' purposes... Anyway i'm going to look through the lease and check what it actually says about internet use if nothing is in there then i'll talk to them.

It's a DSL-G604T, I've checked and it's running ' V3.02B01T01' so the firmware is up to date and whatnot.

After talking to a house mate about it, he says he doesn't have a problem with ping spikes when he is playing KoToR, so I am wondering if it's on my end. May get him to ping the router to see if he gets the same results as me.

Just wondering if you do a consistent ping to the Router how are your ping times are they higher than 10 ms and if they do when does it spike.

Could also be the fact that the Router isn't able to handle all the clients.
If you know how many people and how many devices are connected to that one device?

As you can see in these ss' LINK , The pings are averaging 1/2ms and when it does jump there is no lead up to it.

I thought about the router not being able to handle the amount of clients (6 of us, maybe about 10 clients various computers/phones/consoles), but this still happens even when none of them have been home and when I just did these ss' there were only 4 clients on (including to phones..).

EDIT: So I just tried the same ping on one of my housemates laptop and they got spikes (but sub 100), so just thinking it's something on my end now.
