Point And Shoot Camera

Thread Starter
Currently looking to pick up a point and shoot camera for some of my future trips. As much as I would love to learn a DSLR I don't see myself going too crazy with learning all the workings and would mostly just prefer something on the compact side and more portable.

Anyways, I have a couple upcoming vacations with things such as an alaskan cruise / grand canyon / washington DC / zoo, aquarium visits.

I would like something of quality and sufficient enough to record such trips

I saw people throughout threads (there didn't seem like many P&S) mention the

Canon PowerShot S100

Are there any other high quality ones people could recommend? Or is this likely the best buy? I saw others with a much higher zoom capability (Canon SX40 HS) , but wasn't sure of the tradeoffs,

I am not really in a rush - I have ~5 months before I would really like to have it for one of the trips, the others can deal with some older one.

Any input would be greatly appreciated !

The S100 is a great camera, but do you really need to spend nearly $400 on a point and shoot camera?

The S95 can be had for nearly $100 less if you can find them (if not even lower) and is plenty of camera.

It looks like your only reqs are portable and relatively small; You dont have to spend $400 to get a quality camera. The ELPH series by Canon are very capable cameras for lower prices - something like the ELPH 520 is one of the smallest cameras Canon offers and packs lots of good features (including featuring the same Digic V image processor found in the most recent camera lineup).

Thanks for the reply, the price isn't really a concern of mine, anything under $500 is fine with me.

I did a quick search of ELPH 520 reviews and they seem, well, less than stellar? thinking.gif

Seems like most places have the S95 for like, if anything, $10 cheaper than the s100

Perhaps a Canon PowerShot SX260 HS?

I kind of like the idea of the zoom

I've used the lower model of this camera, one with 8x zoom instead of 16x and I love the damn thing.

For $200 i is an awesome all around camera.

For travel, you can also check out Sony Cybershot TX series. They are very compact and weather proof. I have a TX-5 and it works great for me so far. The only downside is that it doesn't shoot RAW.
