Thanks for the find, I will be sure to let my superiors know we are about to have a refresh, and I have been pushing them more towards nVid for the more boastful support.  If anything at least we can get hands on demo models and do side by sides.

I have very little understanding about gpu-acceleration, but would this venture be instead of or in addition to efforts involving open CL for GPGPU applications? Or is this thing more-specific to CAD-related tasks?

It's pretty much only CAD work. Atleast AMD is actually waking up to the fact that they haven't done jack with workstation cards.

What are you talking about? The FirePro V7900 is better than the Quadro 4000 (both are in the $700 range) in most CAD programs, which doesn't sound too bad to me. http://www.cgchannel.com/2011/10/review-professional-gpus-nvidia-vs-amd-2011/

Yeah we use PTC Creo on campus (Wildfire Pro-Engineer 5.0 (x64) too), but yeah.  I am not "using" the programs per-se, I am just the admin for the labs.  In essence, I have my fingers in about a 100 honeypots or cookie jars and I have to make our machines compatible with all.

 

Creo / Wildfire is a big one.  Another big one is Schlumberger Eclipse, Techlog, Dassault Solidworks, AutoCAD, MasterCAM, Revit, Inventor.... its a nightmare sometimes... I am just glad I wasn't doing this 10 years ago.

I was. Was. Yes it is a nightmare. Funny thing is, we(SGI) were working with both ATI (at the time) and nVidia on OpenGL acceleration and ATI was excited and forth coming about the technology with us. nVidia seemed to care less until certain software started relying more on OpenGL. Once they got sued by SGI for stealing the graphics technology (they still use today) nVidia was all of a sudden our best buds... After the AMD buyout, our relationship sort of dried up until my boss (Advanced Graphics Marketing Director) went to work for them.

With HD7 cards being such brutal computing powerhouses and AMD taking the proper approach towards actively supporting computing on them, all I can see is AMD scoring a win over the next generation of cores.

I like AMD more due to their gpus being more powerful than nvidias in ALU tasks and more pure math calcs amd is always the wiiner.
Gaming isnt everythiing

+ dont forget the GCN artchitecure speeds up the whole computer by allowing the cpu to distribute tasks to the gpu allowing for a faster system overall
