Water Cooling Noob Adventures

Hello everyone, I am Frankzro and today I would like to discuss the possibility's of creating a really nice water cooling solution with my current set up.

Parts:

Case - Level 10 GT (Has space at the top to fit a 240mm Rad- Currently using H100)

x2 Video Cards MSI GTX 580 Lightnings 3GB version, ( Have read up that finding the proper cooling plates/copper blocks are INSANELY hard)

CPU- i7 2600k

Now, the plan I keep thinking of is to some how make it so that I can use the watercooling externally and have the rad inside of its own box ( I have seen these before). What would be better and more practical ? Using my level 10 GT or going totally external? Plus, what about the maintenance, how often will I need to change parts and all that so that I am getting the best and most optimal performance ?

My goal is to maximize the life of my computer and get the most performance boost that I can get. ( with out killing anything tongue.gif )

Money is not too much of an issue, just I don't want to spend more than my computer is worth lol smile.gif...

So, you geniuses help me out haha!

Here is a link to my Picasa so you can see what I am working with.

https://picasaweb.google.com/111712095945866917997/February292012

So lets get this rolling, I plan to get the parts horded and then build it at a later date due to me being at work 7 days a week and not being home sometimes at months at a time.

Phobya make a rather nice radiator stands for reasonable prices. Either 9x120 or 9x140 models. No need to fill it up with radiators, but you can also mount a pump and res to it. That way everything but the blocks and tubing are within the computer. One thing would be to add two sets of QDC's so you can unhook the computer from the cooling solution.

Aquatuning sells a nice bundle for 300$ which includes the 9x120 rad, the rad stand and the fans.

Linky

One 240mm rad would be enough for your cpu. Don't count on adding two 580's to that 240 or you probably will be getting worst temps than on air. So for a CPU only loop you could go all internal with a 240 rad. If you want to add the GPU's then you'll probably need something exterior. A rad box is not the be all and end all either. They sell brackets to mount on your rear 120mm exhaust so you could mount a 480 in back also.

You have a lot of options, and many choices to make. Get reading!!! thumb.gif

So, from the sound of it I will need more than one rad ? Which will cost money ... thumb.gif

Most of all I really want to cool those cards since I hear they are VERY good to overclock with, so lets start with the cards first and then the CPU. I wanna go with the hard stuff first cause the CPU is Cake Walk. Keep-em coming, I wanna see this thing from all angles!

Pretty nice

I would change all the fans for it though... cause I am addicted to air flow tongue.gif

As far as the small parts go, what are the most reliable?

Well then the bundle shouldn't be bought, as you'll save on money by not buying the fans.

One problem might be those video cards. They aren't reference models and getting blocks to fit them might be hard to find. There's the EVGA model block (swiftech) but I have no clue if they fit. I think that may actually be your biggest hurdle. Maybe sell them and buy reference models?

Well let me re-iterate that, you can get universal GPU blocks and get some heat sinks for the vram and mosfets... but I think you won't find any full coverage water blocks...

hi frankie, little late to the part but, bitspower has some pretty nice blocks for the lightnings you have:
http://bitspower.com/html/product/pro_show.aspx?num=81091355&kind2=15

if you can, see how many other fan slots you have, you may be able to go all internal if you have a few 120 fan mounts aswell.
rad wise, i always go with swiftech.

use an MCP350 as a pump, i have one, they work great and are rather quiet and small.

for a cpu block, id go with one of these:
http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/shop/blocks/cpu-blocks/ek-supreme-hf-cu.html
if you can locate one.

the tubing and fittings ill discuss with you later, we have lots of work to do.

in other news, frank also learned how to start a car today. that is all tongue.gif

and the girl also outdid the boys....BUZINGA. tongue.gif

As it looks, I will be going the easy route first then the hard route lol, so the CPU setup seems more practical right now and the parts don't seem to insane to purchase... this may work out the way it should work it seems.

Like others have mentioned blocks for your 580s are really hard to find. AND they're expensive smile.gif 175 USD. Also it will be really hard to mod the your case because of its unique looks. I think if you want to go full water, you will have to go external. Also, if you will have a single loop, get an MCP655 (it has much higher performance and will push water for all your blocks). I can only recommend it (I have the Alphacool variant from the same pump. Externally you have to decide but you could theoretically build your own box with similar materials as your case with a wall mount or something else awesome and it could really add to the aesthetics. A 240 for your CPU (like others said) is sufficient.

Cheers

I know the 580 blocks may be really hard to find , but my case is not any different from an 800D on the inside of it. The outside.... (Gross) The inside, beautiful. I may end up using a 120 for my CPU and a 240 for the Vid cards and that is if I can find the copper plates. I should be alright though I have a "professional" helping me with this. But, external still interests me and I will keep an open mind about it. As for a case mod... noooooooo there will be no need to do such a thing tongue.gif... I could always sell my case and get something better "MURDER BOX II *COUGH* "
