How will 1080 content look on a 1440 monitor?

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of picking up a 2560x1440 monitor but I am concerned as to how 1080 content will look on it. I know scaling down games won't look good but what about Blu rays? I watch a lot of Blu rays and I was worried they would look grainy.

Movies look perfect on my 30" monitor - I use my PS3 and PC both for blu-ray playback and they both do exceedingly well, everything looks crisp and sharp! Other thing is that you get accurate colors and amazing viewing angles, definitely worth the purchase!

It'll be stretched out, if you have it set to scale to the monitors resolution, much like how 720 is stretched to 1080. You can set your player to maintain the storage aspect of the media keeping it at 1920*1080 displaying it in the centre of the display(letterboxing) with the black bars around it.
It's viewable, doesn't look to bad. My compressed blurays(4GB average as opposed to 20GB+) look decent at 2560*1600 on my 30" display.
You could just keep the 1080 monitor for movies as well if its an issue.

It should be the same aspect ratio (I think, from the numbers above), so you shouldn't notice any distortion, but if you have picky eyes and you sit relatively close to the display when watching movies, you might notice some things. But if you sit far back, I would be surprised if you notice much of anything.

The q270 is 16:9 aspect ratio, so wouldnt the blu rays in 2550x1440 fill the screen, but have bars on top and bottom only. I got a Q270 Mulit on the way, im going to run my computer blu ray player thru the Hdmi, should look great on a IPS,

They better look good or i will have a monitor for sale.

Same ratio but the display resolution is larger. Unless you set it to scale the resolution up to the monitor's native res, it will display 1920*1080 content within the 2560*1440 space with bars around it.

So it will have bars all the way around it ? , thats not good, so how do you fix that ?. Im guessing though on the q270 mulit with the hdmi and D-dvi, if you plug into the HDMI it will then run at 1920x1080, that is max resolution thru the hdmi port on the monitor.

I wish I saw what you're seeing. To me, it's pretty obvious that the picture is blown up, so while it looks fine, it doesn't look sharp like it would on an actual 1080p television.

No, just bars on the top and bottom.

So will it look better on a led 1080p monitor, or on something like the q270 catleap ips , im hoping you say the catleap, cause i just bought a q270 multi monitor hoping it would be great for my blu rays.

The only way to fix this without stretching or cropping the frame is by getting a monitor with the same aspect ratio--it will just up-scale to the native res.
