[VR-Zone] Intel cuts desktop Ivy Bridge CPU pricing ahead of launch - Page 10

So many people jumping to conclusions tongue.gif Wait for the chip to be released, that ^ might be the case, might not be. Realise that Ivy has a higher transistor density, so it's common sense that it will run hotter not produce more heat then SB.

Yes compared to SB, IB is a flop. It can't oc better than SB and it runs hotter than SB all at the same price that SB was at launch. It's a rip off to me. They should have stuck with HD2000 or better yet, no IGP. Trinity is more or less going to own the notebook market. I don't know why Intel even bothers with IGP. And it appears Haswell will continue the trend in focusing on better IGP. Intel is just setting themselves up to be taken by surprise by AMD.

Please do explain.

The sheer numbers might not beat SB but last time I looked IPC was in there for something, and that 7% improvement somewhere down that line. IBs average overclock will probably beat most OCN members average overclock on SB in actual performance, as one can drop 7% in Ghz and still achieve the same level of performance.

We were spoiled with SB's overclocking improvement over Nehalem/Westmere. No-one could realistically keep those 1Ghz jumps up.

I ask you this - when's the last time Intel has had such a small performance gain after a die shrink (or new architecture; I'm not picky)? As I recall, going from 65nm to 45nm with Core 2 Duo was roughly 5% IPC gain, plus 12% in clocks from E6600 to E8400 at the same price. Everything starting with Core i series thus far has added at least 15%. Compare to 3% clockspeed gain, 7% IPC... I am disappointed, and anyone who plans on using a CPU for daily use on air is as well.

Considering that all Core 2 iterations added sufficient performance over the previous CPU, as have all the Core i, same with Pentium 4 -> Pentium D, it's quite possible this is the most underwhelming release from Intel since Pentium 4 in terms of CPU performance gain. If you have numbers proving otherwise, please shut me up.

So yes, feel free to defend Ivy Bridge, but also realize this is the first time in several years that Intel couldn't give us a 15% performance gain in one way or another (excluding the fact that SB i3's can't OC = technically 1st-gen i3's are the fastest with mild OC).

7% better actually. If you were to overclock your SB to 4.8Ghz, you'd "only" need 4.4Ghz on IB. How is that worse ?
Even IF you were lucky and got a 5.2Ghz SB chip, you'd still be able to beat it with a lucky IB chip, as shown on this forum, in this thread, by OCN members.
Does it overclock worse ? In sheer numbers maybe. But if you can't look past the "ZOMG 5 GIGaHERTSSS" you should have bought an FX-8150 and ignored the power consumption, IPC, IPS and heat output entirely.
No. Just, no. IB beats SB at stock and most OCs the average overclocker will achieve.

4.7GHz IB ~ 5GHz SB... most 3770ks aren't getting above 4.7-4.8GHz from what we know... yep, definitely a GREAT update.

Looks like the 3570k tends to OC similarly to the 2500k though, which is a good sign for gamers at least.

Technically it's not a cut since IB has yet to be made available at retailers, so it's just an adjustment of projected prices.

But it is a bit worrisome to say the lest. And as far as 98C load temps, it just can't be true, must be a faulty sensor or bad software reading support.

I agree on that , i gues its going to be something like that .

Dont think intel would even release a CPU that goes that hot on benches / overclocking

Most monitoring programs aren't even (fully) set yet for IB
post #99 of 149
but the fact is overclockers are like 1% of total consumers. if SB and IB is compared on stock clocks it IS better. faster clock speed, better IPC and it runs cooler and more efficient. so I will not be surprised if its overclocking will suck.

with that said if Ivybridge is like this then AMD can definitely catch up!

I doubt it.

AMD is about ~30% behind in IPC compared to Intel. If Intel did nothing for the next 3 years and AMD manages to pull off 15% IPC gains in the next 2 CPU gens, without issues. They might catch up.
