Need a $1000(or less) video editing machine to replace stolen laptop

Thread Starter
I had my i7 laptop stolen and need to replace it ASAP as this is how I pay my bills.
Most of my needs are editing 1080 video in Vegas, After Effects, Audition, and Photoshop. I do enjoy gaming but my work needs out weigh my gaming needs..

I replaced a busted dual core desktop with the laptop so I have a few useable parts.

I DO NOT need:
Case, hard drives, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, Win 7.

Im looking at:
Intel i5 2500k
GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3P
G Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600
ZALMAN CNPS9500
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
Total with tax and shipping is $635

I have no clue as to which video card I should get..

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, It is getting old going over to my buddies to use his computer to work.

GTX 580s are really coming down in price since the release of the 600 series

you can pick up a MSI Twin Frozr one for alittle less than $400 and they still have plenty of power to meet your needs

In your case it would actually be worth it to go with a 2600k for the multi-thread work load - GPU wise I'd grab something Nvidia for the Cuda power, Quaddro would be the best. A 550ti or 560 is most likely going to fit in your budget the best.

Definitely go for 2600K. Besides it being better for your needs, with some luck, you live somewhere close to Microcenter - they're having a sale on them for $200 each right now. Generally, you'll pay that for a 2500K.
Also, I'd replace that Zalman. It's more expensive, and performs worse than Hyper 212, which in itself is outperformed by Enermax ETS-T40 as shown here
For video cards, I'd recommend grabbing a GTX 580 or a 7870. They're both between 300-400. You can get a Twin Frozr 7870 for $330 after rebate and promo (EMCNFJN89)

If you live near a Microcenter grab a 2600K ASAP for $200. For your needs you definitely want the most processing power. An 8GB RAM kit is fine, but 16GB are really cheap, but I do not know how much you used on a daily basis. Any decent Z68 motherboard is fine, I would get a cheaper one or go for a Z77 at that price. CPU cooler...grab a Hyper 212 for cheap. PSU, you really only need a good 600 watt for any single GPU setup. With money saved, you may be able to get a GTX 680 in that budget and be good on both fronts of gaming and graphics design.

Many thanks!

Do I really need a beefy video card? I'm not really wanting to drop 400 on a card if I don't absolutely have to..

The nearest microcenter is about 3hrs away, saving 120 - 70 for gas is still worth it.

It really depends, I just added the best GPU that would fit into your budget. What sort of settings do you want games to play at?
