Until I can purchase a new note/ultrabook later this summer, I have to resort to using very old parts for my everyday PC-need. The build has come along quite nice so far, but I'd like to perform some cheap upgrades so the system will atleast run CS:S in a more decent manner.
Specs now:
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice, @1.98GHz instead of stock 1.8)
- MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum/socket 939 (@220MHz)
- 2x512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200 CL2.5
- Asus nVidia Geforce 6800LE AGP (full unlocked so GT) + Zalman VF700-AlCu
- Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM
After a little browsing I've come across some interesting and cheap CPU's to replace my crappy Venice with. Naturally I'd go for the X2, but if I can remember correctly.. 2.4GHz against 2.0 makes quite a difference in K8's performance, not to mention the use San Diego's double cache could provide..
- AMD Athlon 64 3800+ / 2.4GHz Venice or Orleans, 512KB L2
- AMD Athlon 64 3700+ / 2.2 GHz San Diego, 1MB L2
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ / 2.0GHz Manchester, 2x 512KB L2
What to pick for my needs?
