Help me reseat gpu heatsink.

Hello OCN! So I'm about to purchase some new TIM since my AS5 somehow ended up in my brothers pocket and then he proceeded to wash his shorts with the AS5 still in his pocket sooo.... I'm less than happy with him. Point being buying some new TIM and would like the OCN suggestion of the day, but that is not all! I also was thinking of reseating my Xfired 6870's too. I have never done this before, but I would asume that it is similar to Cpu only smaller. Is there anything that I should consider before taking on the task? Certain method? Do's and Don'ts? Thanks for all your help!

I use NT-H1. It has served me well and is relatively inexpensive.

Regarding how to reseat the GPU, it isn't very different, as you suspected. The one thing to watch out for is the VRAM coolers as they are either easy to knock off or require some type of special interface like a thermal pad. Such situations would be the exception in my experience, but better be careful.

Once you reinstall the cooler, do not lift it up to check the TIM spread! Don't overly tighten the screws as well. That is all! smile.gif

Thermal compound of choice?
After removing the heatsink:

1. clean it off with isopropyl alcohol (91% is great, 70% aint bad either). I use a microfiber tower. wipe it with a clean side and let it dry
2. clean off old TIM on gpu in same manner.
3. put small BB gun pellet sized drop dead center of the gpu die.
4. reseat heatsink.

choice of TIM... Whatever I have laying around (usually AS5 , mx2, or OCZ freeze)
