My current PC:
Motherboard
Picture of my pc
Asus DirectCu HD 6950 1GB
PCI Sound Blaster X-FI audio card
PC is located in a separate small room.
I have been searching info on different coolers for many weeks and here is a list I gathered:
Information + links (using 7970 as it will most likely be that same cooler for 680):
Hardocp Gigabyte 7970 custom cooler
Hardocp Reference 7970 cooler
- Guru3D Gigabyte 7970 Windforce 1000Mhz Temperature 64c Noise 42db
- Guru3D Asus 7970 DirectCU 1000Mhz Temperature 69c Noise 39db
- Guru3D MSI 7970 Lightning 1070Mhz Temperature 63c Noise 38db
Guru3D reference 7970 78c 42db.
GTX 680 ones:
- Tweaktown MSI GTX 680 TwinFrzr OC reference pcb? This review is overclocked from the factory default oc, so it's more noisier than reference stock 680. Can't seem to find a good review yet.
- Guru3D Gigabyte 680 Temperature 63c Noise 40db
Guru3D reference GTX 680 79c 41db. Gigabyte 680 looks very nice.
What I'm searching:
- Within 100euros of reference price.
- Doesn't need to overclock
- 1 GPU setup only, my eyes don't like sli/xfire
- Low db in higher frequencies, this is what puts me off in every loudness test. The cheap sound meters stop at 8kHz, which is very low. Human ear goes up to 20kHz, I can still hear up to 17.5kHz (XF Hearing Test Beta, don't put headphones on your ears at the first try and read the warning. It is quite loud). Although I'm not sure if fan noises go above 8kHz, but I would like to stay away from smaller fans.
- I will use custom fan-profile, where I put it to float around 80c under full load. Currently I have set my Asus directCU 6950 1GB( this card fan's are different from 3-slot version) 81c under full stock load with 39% fan. Above 39% fan, it's becoming annoying with higher pitch sound. PC room temperature is 28c. I have noticed that giving up on fan speed decreases the noise a lot, huge difference between 68c/70%(I would go crazy on this one very quickly) vs 73c/50%(Annoying) vs 81c/39%(Silent). Notice that the PC is in the other room.
- I want durability (4 years under full load near 80c, perhaps it will continue to be physx-card for even longer after that). I don't buy another card every 1-2 years. Last year was a bit different with the bitcoin boom, got free 2x 6950 out of it.
Choices:
- Asus DirectCU 3-slot cooling should be quite nice for single gpu setup. This is my first choice currently. Only thing bad would be, that I would need to get another audio card in pci-e slot, if I want to use my GTX 275 for physx. Onboard audio sucks, I can hear the computer interferences.
- Gigabyte Windforce?/soc?. This card looks very good on durability side and I have been reading that this is actually more quieter than Asus DirectCU. With this cooling I wouldn't need to buy anything extra for physx. The Guru3D review looks very good.
- MSI Twin Frozr. I don't like the fact that they made it over reference GTX 680, makes me wonder if it will be durable enough. Also I have been reading that their fan's are made little bit differently, giving lots of noise at some point. The Lightning version might be too expensive and I would need to wait even longer...
- Water. Is there any GPU water coolers that doesn't require upkeep? I did look these kinds of water coolers on CPU side and they were pretty bad, they actually were more worse than the air coolers.
Or have I missed something else?
I know that there isn't any information about Asus DirectCU GTX680 version yet. But if you compare through 580/7970 types of DirectCU coolers, the main question would be: Asus DirectCU vs Gigabyte Windforce, at their stock settings, which one gives less high pitch and general noise at 80c in a ~28c room?

This sounds extremely (too?) optimistic on noise side for Gigabyte.Gigabyte 7970 67c/34% fan at 1000Mhz core
Reference 7970 83c/51% fan at 925Mhz core stock
GTX 580 89c/56% fan stock
HD 6970 88c/49% fan stock
Now, we found that the noise level of the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7970's fans at 80% to be about the same as the GeForce GTX 580's once it reached 45-50%.
