Thinkpad T61 running super hot! Even after new paste and no dust! - Page 2

post #11 of 19
TP Fan control on smart mode will let it run hotter since fan does not spin faster until it gets closer to TJMax (~100 C). Leave it to BIOS mode or manually input 7 for speed (or 64 for maximum speed but it is loud).

Also try setting power management to Balanced. Power source optimized or always on will mean CPU cores never parks and runs at max frequency. Temps will be hotter at idle.

you can edit the smart controller. click your start menu and go to all programs then to TPFanControl and edit the ini. Scroll down till you find the smart control settings and change them. I have it set so I always have the lowest fan on.

Also Note I have a T61P what has a better cooling system then a standard T61
40-50c idle is what your looking to get, for most tasks it shouldn't go over 70c, and under prime95 it shouldn't really get hotter then 80c.

Well, I put new paste on, and polished every single scratch out of the heat sink's surface. Results?

BTW, I never actually use TP Fan Control for anything other than temp readings, it auto sets itself to smart when you open it. Bios knows best. Even after watch a 1080p video and being on here, its still idling at under 45C, and only got up to 55C max while watching the HD video. Thanks for the help guys.

I also just installed the ThinkVantage active hard drive protection system, I'm starting to love this laptop more and more. Just need to save up for an SSD.

Sorry to go off topic, but for an SSD I know you need a modded BIOS made by Middleton, is anyone using it? And does it support SATA 3.0?

That chipset supports SATA 3.0 Gb/s but not SATA 6.0 Gb/s. It is bad how Lenovo crippled the stock T61 BIOS to limit speeds to only SATA 1.5 Gb/s.

Yeah, people are saying on their that it supports 3.0 with the modded BIOS, so shouldn't that mean it should support 6gbs a second? Or is that only Sandy Bridge?

SATA
1st generation -> 1.5Gb/s
2nd generation -> 3.0Gb/s
3rd generation -> 6.0Gb/s

We refer to SATA by its bandwidth not by its revision or generation. SATA 6.0Gb/s is only supported by the newest chipsets that were released last year. T61 was released circa 2007.

you should look into using throttlestop or rmclock. You can undervolt your cpu at the same speeds and get a lot lower temps. I undervolted mine to .95v and I'm running full 2.5ghz with my t9300. Also throttlestop with middleton bios lets you have a slight overclock (dual ida) on some cpus. Mine is huming along at 2.7ghz but requires 1.0875v but that's still a large undervolt for that speed. Great laptop, mine comes with an LG 1920x1200 wuxga, built like a tank. Also it's good to cool the cpu/gpu because the nvidia chips are known to go bad on these if they get too hot/cool down/ too hot etc. I leave tpfancontrol at 7 constant because it's prob better for the bearings than having to spin/up/down/up. etc.
