SB and z77

Thread Starter
So whats this I heard about SB not overclocking well with a z77 board. True? Is it not worth a z77? I wanted to pick up a Sabertooth z77 but not so sure about it atm. Any help on helping me pick a mobo would be great. I was going to wait for Ivy but I might go with a 2500k or something along those. Is the temp with IB really an issue?

i think there is no real definitive answer yet but in time it will tell..
peoiple are speaking of higher temps on ivy bridge as well here on OCN but even this is not definitive yet as i believe a lot reviews and benches have been done with engineering samples so it will be interesting when the consumer chips are released to see how they perform smile.gif

I really hope what you are saying is true. Been waiting to upgrade my PC, wanted to go with SB but decided to wait longer since IB was around the corner.

upgrading to ivy bridge will be perfectly fine especially coming from Q6600 you will drool even at SB let alone IB...
i don't see any problems with ivy bridge nor will it disappoint..
now boards have been released and a couple of weeks till we see cpus on mainstream markets.. wait wait now smile.gif

this isn't true, just SB isn't working as perfect with Z77 as no one really tested Z77 with SB, now they are and they will make the boards just as smooth with SB.

I am not sure about the Z77 Sabertooth, but i heard it has some OCP issue that is fixed by BIOS.

However the GIGABYTE Z77 boards are OCing as good or better than GIGABYTE Z68 board b/c LLC is vastly improved, BLCK is vastly improved, and the BIOS is vastly better, however there are some micrcode update issues that need to be addressed resulting in odd behavior when you hit restart like the board will say OC failed but boot into BIOS with your current OC lol and you just have to hit F10, that is something I have never seen happen on IB with the same board, but happened with SB. It has to do with the stepping and microcode update required to make CPUs of the same socket work between sockets. It happened with Sbe quite a bit between the retail and ES steppings, lucky for you guys IB's final ES stepping is retail stepping.

zero problems here with my 2500k. 4.5Ghz at 1.28 volts on load.
I just need to fix some temp issues and do some more stability testing.
