Overclocking and Crossfire

Hi,

I'm not new to overclocking CPU's but I certainly am when it comes to overclocking graphics cards.

I have 2 6970 DCII's in crossfire. These triple decker cards are suppose to over clock real well given the size of the heat sink on them. So, that's 6 slots full of graphics.

I'm using ASUS GPU Tweak to get it to 920/1395 at 1193 mV. The defaults are 890/1375. I blue screen when I go higher unfortunately, and I've tried nudging up the mV to see if it would help.

Should I go higher? Is it possible to unsafe voltages using GPU Tweak? I'm not familiar with what's safe or not for GPUs.

My question is it tougher to get a stable overclock when you're doing crossfire? With heatsinks like these I really want to get them cruising, particularly because I'm also rocking eyefinity which means I can't run everything on Ultra anymore, but not if it means I have to take them out of crossfire.

Thanks for being patient.

Inquiring minds would like to know. I also just got my first CF setup and I haven't bothered to try to overclock them yet while together (I did overclock with just one card while I waited for the second to arrive).

I've gotten odd crashes/freezes though, not sure if it's because of the crossfire setup or the fact that the arch is new and drivers are new. Cards don't even get hot (about 60C is max I'll see on them).

Could I get some help? Or point me in a direction where I can RTFM that may answer my question?

yes it is possible to oc in crossfire...however you will be limited to the best that the slowest card can do...lol...that make sense?
The cooler you can keep them the higher they will go

i beleive that 1250 is considered about all you want to run through that card someone else might know better but tthat is where i draw the line with my 6950's......heat is a limiting factor....mine are underwater and even when benching and running 1250 through them they never exceed 43c.....i would not recommend anything over 1200 for a 24/7 oc personally

I run afterburner but the asus version should be just fine thumb.gif

I figured it was "possible" to OC in crossfire, afterall, I've done it to a slight degree. I wanted to know if it was more picky or difficult. I've overclocked both cards to the same frequencies and voltages.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting stability, I blue screen pretty hard. They're definitely not overheating either.

Can I crank up the voltage in GPU Tweak, or is it like a motherboard and could possibly cause damage? What's your current mV for 1000/1425?

i have to run 1250mV through it to get those clocks stable...but i don't run that 24/7...1200mV would be my recommended max for 24/7...others may say different..just my opinion....so yes excess voltage can cause damage

yes they are more finicky it seems in xfire....a couple things to try...overclock pcie slot....i bump mine up 105 to 110mhz...play with it see if it helps....may not help in clock speeds but may notice in performance...also bump mb-nb voltage a bit to help stabilize cards...even though not overheating...cooler temps meen higher stable clocks so do whatever you can to make them run as cool as possible

also make sure to test with a benchmark ...sometimes even though you have a higher clock you may have lost FPS

High people, I'm new to this building a rig thing but have tried to do alot of research, I was wandering if its possible to use 2 x 7850 in crossfire mode then use the 7770 that my mate gave me as a physx card ? would i see any better results or anything ? or shall I just leave the 7770 out of the mix ?

7770 sounds like another amd card.... you need a nvidia card to do physx as its kinda a nvidia thing... their is CPU physx but it is more limited that what the nvidia cards can do. Little searches just here on OCN should be able to give you more in depth detail, but from what I've read, what I said seems to be the case.

Thanks for the help, it's a shame really lol having the spare card just lying around
