No, it's already faster clock for clock just becuase many of these es chips are not reaching 5ghz means nothing until we see more retail chip reviews.

5% is nothing. We all know this. People did not jump from First gen to SB because of clock per clock perfroamnce but the fact that the OC jumped from 4Ghz to 5GHz. You can argue all u want its faster clock per clock but it is also replacing a 1.5 years old CPU. Not impressive.

ES chips?

These are release steppings and retail chips.

Still par for the course.

SB was the exception, not the rule. SB was also a tock, not a tick.

Well, going from 1156 (or Nehalem//1366) to Sandy Bridge netted about 15% in IPC gain, and 15-20% in OC headroom. This indeed was a huge performance gain, AND Intel managed to bring graphics performance up ~60%. Anyone defending Ivy Bridge as an upgrade is just a bit delusional. It's a fact that this is the worst "upgrade" (tick or tock) since Pentium 3 to Pentium 4.

Let's be clear. 7% IPC + 3% higher stock clock = 10% gain (and if you're lucky, 3% higher OC headroom - very doubtful these will hit 4.95 as easily as SB hit 4.8, but I'm giving Intel benefit of the doubt). Waiting for someone to show me a worse upgrade. The only *possible* one I can think of is 65nm to 45nm Core 2 Quad, comparing the first 45nm CPUs to the Q6600 - it was slightly a wash, but when you consider that MSRP dropped by a couple hundred, and Intel released better 45nm C2Q's after the initial release, still not bad.

Makes perfect sense.
You want to overclock to high levels? You spend the money on cooling.

SB just spoiled everyone on ambient cooling

Regardless of what one may think on the subject of Ivy, I never understood why there are swarms of people that come into threads about new processors and say "not impressed, not upgrading." I understand there are people that need the latest and greatest, but I'm sure its not ever other person that says that in these threads, most of them with SB rigs. Besides most of the people that need CPUs for heavy workloads are on SB-E or on server chips.

Yes there is but who uses LN2 24/7? I couldn't possibly care less about benching on extreme cooling to be honest.

No-one obviously, although I'd guess a handful might use Phase Change cooling 24/7.

Any form of released has some truth. BD was known to be bad 2-3 months before and people where just denning and and saying wait for official release. Why dont we see stuff like IVY did 5.4Ghz with only 1.1v .Or IVY did 5.2GHz on air.

Why does clock speed matter? As mentioned in the thread many times, SB has to be clocked ~500Mhz higher than IB to match it...If most IB chips can do ~4.7Ghz then they'll beat nearly all SB chips as most don't ever hit 5.2Ghz.

that's what they all say... "I'll wait for the official reviews." like the leaks are lies or something.

Nah, there's just more to it than leaks will ever show. For example, if all the leaks of BD had shown it at 5Ghz but retail chips could hit 6 on air, it'd be a different story. With IB, we know how well it OCs and (roughly) how well it performs but most people aren't willing to do 1+1=2 and realize that IB will be a tiny bit faster than SB...Just like it was before SB came out.

Yeah, people only jumped from Nehalem to Sandy because it OCed high and improved IPC. It was an exceptional chip. IB will be a great chip, but you're just proving what I said...SB was so exceptional that IB will be a disappointment for a lot of people until proper benchmarks come out simply because of that.

Anyone who expected to upgrade their 2500k or 2600k to a 3570k or 3770k from the moment we knew IB existed was a fool. I mean seriously, it's a die-shrink...It will end up a little faster overall (ie. 45nm C2D vs 65nm C2D) but the price won't warrant it unless you're upgrading for different reasons too. (Eg. Go from a 2500k to a 3770k if you need HT)
