Need a new modem!

Hey guys,

I've been having trouble with my internet for the past few months. My internet sometimes goes down for no reason at all and it gets pretty annoying specially when I'm gaming. This happens randomly to be honest, sometimes when me and my brother are gaming and sometimes even when I'm browsing the web. I thought it was the router at first but then I tried plugging in the modem directly to my laptop and internet is still down.

I've tried calling Comcast so they can give me a "new signal" but the internet doesn't come back; it usually comes back after a number of modem resets/reboots.

So I'm currently using a Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 as a modem which Comcast gave me a couple of years ago and I'm pairing it with a WRT54G Linksys router. I'm a networking newbie so I don't really know what to look for in a modem. I have Comcast 12 mbps internet and I love my internet to be fast, I game a lot while my brother is gaming too i don't know if that helps. Oh and my budget is $80 and below. I hope you guys can help me out finding a good option.
Thanks!

I personally have one and I can't say enough great things about it. If Comcast supports DOCSIS 3.0, you'll get a little more than 12Mbps down with this modem too. wink.gif

Thanks for the reply! I actually looked it up and read this review,

http://www.amazon.com/review/RZBJC6SR0SAO7/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#RZBJC6SR0SAO7

I "googled sb6120 comcast problem" and in fact there are a lot of people that have problems with this modem but there are also a lot who don't. It seems weird to me that Comcast lists it as a compatible modem when there are some people having trouble with it... it seems like a great choice but I'm not sure if I should go for it.

I bought the sb6121 and had no issues with comcast and activating it on their network.

I believe he thinks we're talking about dial-up modems or something.

Time-Warner/Comcast are QQing about the modem because of people running modified firmware on it. I have a 6120 running right now, but it was provisioned 2 years ago. It seems that they are making people use SB6580's with the ISP's firmware and locking down the gui so you can't use your own DNS servers. Then when you try to call in and bridge the 6580 to use with your own router the ISP will act like they don't know what you're talking about which makes me lawl hard.

I don't know if they'll provision amazon modems either fyi. My 6120 was from bestbuy and that was the only reason why they added it.
I'd just get a 6121 if I were you from bestbuy/fry's/microcenter whatever you have near by and activate it via the online way instead of going through what I've gone through.

My 2c.

I'm sure you have a modem too. Even fiber services have a modem or transceiver to convert fiber optic to ethernet
