file server question

Thread Starter
So I'm not exactly sure how it works. If I have videos on a files server with something like a Celeron G530 and IGP, and play the videos from an i5 2500K and GTX 680 system, the i5 hardware is used, not the server pc's hardware right? Also does playing videos over a home network result in a loss of quality?
As long as the network can handle the bandwidth needed for the file playing over the network, it will work fine.

Yes, your i5/680 is "running" the video, but the celeron is serving the file, which it as enough power for.

No loss of quality, worst that would happen is jitter/lag or sometimes freezing if your network isnt fast enough.

Well if the network isn't fast enough, I guess I can always just copy the videos. Thanks for clearing that up.

You should be fine on your network. 100/1000Mbps will do, most everyone in the world is atleast on fast ethernet (100mbps) by now (I hope). biggrin.gif

I have two servers capable of streaming media at my house - a Phenom II X4 925, and an Athlon 64 X2 BE-2300. The BE-2300 is a low power Socket AM2 CPU with a 1.9 GHz clockspeed. It does fine even with multiple concurrent activities going on (and in this case, it's the Windows Home Server box, so it can be doing a backup, running my security cameras AND hosting a video file at the same time on my gigabit network without any issues)

That help at all? smile.gif

so then the network speed has nothing to do with my ISP right? it's completely dependant on hardware?

and I thanks for the Athlon info. I had an Athlon BE 2350 I've been using up til this month. it was pretty decent. slow, but got the job done.

would more cores on the Phenom benefit a server?

1) Correct. You network speed depends on your motherboards for all computers involved (if you are just using the ethernet cable connected to your mobo) and your router. If you're physically connected with a cable (vs a wireless connection) you should have no problems. Even a 100 mbs connection will do fine.

2) Not for a file server.. Unless you start doing more than just serving up media and computer backups, a dual core will do nicely.

ISP will play no part in your home streaming unless you plan to stream out to other devices when away from home. HW requirements are not that serious either if streaming is your main plan for the server.
