What happened to the FX 8170 it seems to be MIA

Thread Starter
I was under the impression that there was "supposed to be" an FX 8170 out at at the end of Q1 , possibly with a new stepping . It appears to be either MIA or DOA . No word no leaks - not a thing .
Does anybody know what is going on ?
Have AMD just abandoned it to work on Piledriver ?

8170 is counter productive with Piledriver around the corner. /thread

It disappeared from the roadmaps. It's good that they're focusing on Piledriver though, and it'll be on AM3+ as well

Honestly to me, Bulldozer was just a huge scam to sell a lot of AM3+ mobos and a lot of underperforming CPUs.

Obviously AMD knew they were underperforming....yet still released them at completely ridiculous prices (so that consumers wouldn't know immediately)

I've had more AMD systems than Intel systems, but I'll say this...if Piledriver doesn't deliver, I'm done with AMD.

The way things appear to be going Piledriver could be a (very) long way around the corner .
I have a 990fx board with a PII 955 sitting on it waiting for a better CPU - X6 1100Ts are for sale on eBay for $300 + in Au so I am not going that way. and from what I can gather an 8120 would struggle to out perform the 955 . Although I have other machines and it is not urgent , I dislike having money tied up in something not used . It (the Mobo) was bought in anticipation of BD but BD just did not seem to be worth the asking price . I thought that an 8170 might (if they had a new stepping ) be an actual upgrade from the 955 as opposed to a sidegrade .

If you're going to boycott any CPU manufacturer who ever marketed over-hyped, underperforming CPUs, you're going to have to switch to computers based on ARM. AMD has done it, Intel has done it (many more times than AMD, in fact), VIA has done it. Even IBM has done it, if you can remember the fiasco that was the first-generation PPC 603. Even ARM has designed underperforming CPU's, but they never lied about it, probably because nobody cared at the time.

The manufacturer really doesn't have any choice but to release a new design, even if it's a slug, after spending billions on R&D. It's up to the consumer to make an informed decision and not buy the slugs. CPU makers have a great track record for getting it right the second time when the public rejects their poorly designed products.

Here's the thing though. The only reason I can possibly imagine for the prices on the 8150s is to intentionally con uninformed buyers. Anyone who knows anythings about CPUs right now know how bad they are. Why are they MORE EXPENSIVE than Intel chips that perform SIGNIFICANTLY better? Simple. Higher price makes them appear better to the uninformed consumer.

I thought the same thing about llano and the A8-3870 which was released way late as A8-3870K (black edition) unlocked processor.

Since Trinity is coming Junish from what I've read, maybe they'll make the 8170 bulldozer then. The new trinties are using the bulldozer cores, so maybe they working out the kinks and possible the 8170 will have a good refresh.

Also, the Bulldozers aren't as bad as you hear. They may lose to Intel, but not that significantly. I own a 8120 ams 2600K and can play games side by side and you can't see a difference in most case. although eyefinity shows slightly. I even invited my friend over to show it off and switched the monitor cables around so it looked like they were playing the Intel rig, but it was actually the AMD system and they said the Intel system was faster (it was actually a couple of FPS slower) than the AMD. I thought it was kind of funny.

But either warm, they were very close in performance. sure a bench will show Intel winning most, but AMD still can win a bench or two.

Hopefully the next round AMD can catch up, but doubt it especially since Intel is always a fab process ahead at all times. AMD just can't compete with that. I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting tired of Intel's super high prices cause AMD can't catch up. I seen Intel 8-core w/HT going for $4,000 on the old X58 boards. That's just ridiculous.

Well if it has the same terrible architecture as the 8120/50 there would be no point in brining it out. They may aswell just cut there huge losses over bd and put all their focus on a new socket finally.

I dont really see a need in it unless it is new stepping. Anand had an article a while back that AMD was putting together a stepping revision but didnt know when it would be coming out. With Piledrive not supposed to be here til late this year, I dont think it would be too bad an idea to throw out an FX chip with some new stepping just to tide us over.
