Zalman Coolers - CNPS9500 versus CNPS9900

Thread Starter
Back in 2005/2006, I went out on a limb and bought a Zalman CNPS9500. And I LOVE IT. My Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66ghz has been running on a heavy (for it) 3.2ghz clock for years, stable and healthy. And that old zalman cooler has had alot to do with it. Sure it runs at heat levels that would scare a sandy bridge user (60-70C under load with the zalman), but hey, that's a core 2 duo.

So, the core 2 duo is awesome, but it's years old, and it's become a bottleneck. Time for an upgrade. I've been considering a 3750k (keeping a very close eye on this thread), and I'm not sure whether I'll go sandy or ivy, but either way, I want solid cooling. From what I've been seeing the ivy bridges run hot like my core 2 duo, so I especially want good cooling if I go that route. I can obviously get an adapter to make the 9500 work with the LGA1155 chipset, but uh, do I want to?

The Zalman CNPS9900MAX looks awesome, and it's design should be better. But how much better? $60 is a tough pill to swallow, but If it would provide a significant heat improvement, I'd want to drop the cash to do it. Does anyone have any experience comparing the 9500 and the 9900MAX? Is it worth the upgrade?

I assume you mean the CNPS9900MAX,which is different than the 9900,and far better. The MAX is a good cooler on modern CPU's.however for that price range there are better cooler's,like the NZXT Havik.

Um, there's something I don't get...
9500 - 6 U-shaped heatpipes
9900 - 4 U-shaped heatpipes

How is the 9900 better?..

9900max has 6 and a 135 mm fan and improved heat-pipe design.

9900 is better.......i owned both........both cooled a 3.6GHz Q6600 with 1.52v........load temps were better on the 9900........it is also much quieter........mounting a 9500 is a bit tricky, and should be done with mb outside of the case
