Slots and Banks?

Thread Starter
Slots are the holes to put the ram in on the mobo right? then what are banks?

If my mobo says it can support 2 banks of pc3200 ram will it support 2x 512 samsung pc3200 ram?

or will it only support the double sided stuff?

I believe, though not positive, a bank is two ram slots. So if your mobo can support two banks of pc3200, it can hold 4 sticks of ram...

Slots can also be the PCI,AGP,or PCI-e slots

Ah its just normal ddr-sdram slots, and i only have 3. The mobo specs say 2Gb of pc3200 and up to 4 of pc2700 or lower. like so

"DDR400 (PC3200), the latest and fastest DDR memory standard, supports bandwidth up to 3.2GB/s to provide enhanced system performance. (Note: PC3200 Max. to 2 banks only; PC2700 Max. to 4 banks only"

can i have 2 sticks of 512 pc3200?

1 bank means that your memory stick has RAM chips on 1 side of it, and 2 banks means that there is RAM chips on both sides of your RAM.

Okay so like let me explain what banks are since no one cleary explained it for you

Each bank of RAM can deliver data the full width of the data bus, so a bank on a 486 would be 32-bits wide, whereas a bank on a Pentium 2 would be 64-bits wide. to fill a bank sometimes it takes more than a single stick of RAM depending on the width of both the bus and the RAm stick. a single 72-pin SIMM, capable of holding data in 32-bit rows, for example fills a bank on a 486 system. that same stick of RAM on a pentium 2 system, in contrast would only handle half the duties. you'd need to add another 72-pin SIMM to make up the other 32 bits of the data bus.just as the cpu does not care where the data it requests is physically located in RAM, it also doesnt care if the data for a single, 64-bit row actually resides on two separate RAM sticks. The northbirdge handles all the details and simply sends the requested data to the cpu on the data bus.

i hope that answers your question and didnt lose on Banks but to the point if its just DDR SD RAM no need to worry just fill the 2 slots and im pretty sure im not so aware on the specs of your motherboard but usually if you just have 3 DIMMs if you occupy the third slot which is probably black it reverts all the DIMMS to SIMMs you have 3 DIMMS running in a Single channel but i couldnt tell you if that holds true with your motherboard but good luck!
