Whatever happened to good stealth/tactical based games?

I really miss all the games like Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Tenchu, Ghost Recon... These kind of games seemed to have really died out. The last MGS and Splinter Cell games I played seemed to have thrown the tacictal, stealth element out the window. I know there is a new Ghost Recon out sometime soon but it doesn't look to promising.

I recently played through Deus Ex: Human Revolution which inspired me to play stealthly sometimes until I realised it was way easier just to blast your way through a lot of the time. There wasn't enough threat or punishment to being spotted most the time. The first few MGS games used to make you try so hard not to get noticed and made it very difficult to get away if you did, making you have to use gadgets and wit to get away. You had to make sure you lined up the perfect headshot and properly hide bodies to avoid getting noticed. Sometimes you couldn't take out enemies because of radio checks so you would have to time things and sneak around them.

Any of you that have played these games know what I'm on about. I really miss this kind of gameplay frown.gif Anyone know of any games like this that have come out in the last few years - Say, 2009 onwards? PC games would be preffered as I don't currently own a PS3 or Xbox360.

Hope you can help me find something good! Thanks thumb.gif

Sniper Ghost Warrior.

About what happened to them? I think it may have been a generational thing. Kids these days want multiplayer fps.

Ah yes that game. I did play through a bit of that but it didn't keep me interested. I think the AI annoyed me a bit or something, I can't quite remember. There is a new one of that game out though isn't there? Maybe I'll enjoy it more... I think you may be right there about the generation thing. It's all about COD these days. Battlefield 3 made me happy though as it really feels like BF2 on a modern game engine and I loved BF2. I used to play Arma 1&2 a lot - Great games but I often wanted something a bit less spaced out with a bit more action, a bit more often. BF3 did the trick nicely for me smile.gif Maybe games are just getting dumbed down a bit for todays generation of teenagers? I miss stealth games so bad frown.gif

hey not a bad suggestion! i played through the first one on ps3 and thought it was to repetative but had a great story. i played a couple other assassins creed games after that but they didn't really do it for me after a few hours of gameplay. i will admit i get bored of games quite easily lol. the games i mentioned in the first post were different though, really loved those games! mgs snake eater is one of my favourite games ever made. such a masterpiece!

I'm not blaming it all on "the kids," but I think the rise of multiplayer has affected it to some extent. Stealth games rely on an environment set up specifically for them. I don't mean the map; I mean the game's "ecosystem" and how the NPCs behave, like how the guards are placed in certain spots and they're walking patrol routes. You can't do that in multiplayer because you can't control the environment in the same way; everyone is running around and shooting.

I'm going to be completely honest. But I think the average attention span wouldn't be long enough to keep somebody drawn into a slower-paced stealth game... It's all about instant satisfaction these days frown.gif Which is why Call Of Duty is so popular, it's very fast paced.

Who remembers the splinter cell on the old Xbox that had XBL multi player? You had the mercs and the agents. Agents only had gadgets and no guns. But could do all the Splinter cell take downs, stuns, flash bang. But mercs got weapons, heat vision, and other toys. I found that was the best mix of stealth, action, and levels of any game in years. Agents had multi paths to take, was a time limit so you had to either make a move of lose. Just the perfect mix of everything for a multi player stealth game. I wish they would add that again, cause I spent like a solid year on that..haha

I believe I am one of many that find these games boring and very slow paced games, I also don't like extreme rushed games, but something in the middle would be something I would buy xD
