Operton Folding

Im curious to know how four Operton 8387 would preform at folding. they arent on any PPD charts at all. Would it even be worth it to run them? Im curious to get into multi CPU folding, buy dont have alot of money to do it. These CPU are fairly cheap now, and the boards that support them are also pretty low.

400-500 probably. I'm just wondering if there even worth it, like would 4 of them out preform a 2500k? cuz you can get them for like 50-60 a piece. plus 150-200 for the board, and coolers for each. Plus a case.

I wouldnt suggest it really. If it could even do Bigadv now I doubt it would be able to after they decrease the deadlines on bigadv (which SHOULD be soon....)

I'd either go with a 2600k build... Or Save up for a 4p like the one in my sig. That'll run you about $1300-1500 and get 280-360k ppd.

They are what, Opteron equivalent of Phenom II right? Another thing to consider is that 4 of them will use quite a lot power.

I'd be more in line with G3RG's objections - I doubt they'd be able to do the -bigadv WUs, which is the main reason you would get a multiCPU rig.

One of my team m8 is running several 4p socket F rigs but I think he may have them all running 84xx's

I'll check with him and try to get some numbers for you.

This just in from my T M8...

I'm not sure if the slowest is running his 8431's or not but if it is that would be 24 threads @ 2.4GHz for a total of 57.6GHz. The 8387's would be 16 threads @ 2.8GHz for a total of 44.8GHz.

To complete a 6901 in the preferred deadline time you would need <57TPF w/UP/DL. For a 6904 you would need <80TPF.

By those numbers I would think that it would work but the total GHz doesn't scale that good. Even if the TPF would be twice as long as a 6901 would bring 61K ppd and the 6904 would bring 83K ppd.

Disclaimer: YMMV and once PG changes deadlines this will also change. And FYI my sig rig does a 6901 <6min and a 6904 <16min TPF

I've been considering it as well but crunching the numbers it doesn't seem worth it really. It's investing into a dead socket, and I would just as soon save up and go G34. The 16 core processors do really well and performance will only get better with Piledriver, and should set you up for the next time they update the bigadv requirements.

One of the biggest reasons I was curious is I really always have been interested about multi CPU builds. All the newer Sockets would be WAY out of my price range. It was more of, wanting to build a server for poos and chuckles, maybe run a FTP server and have it also do some folding. I've never ran a server let alone a multi CPU configuration, so I wouldn't want to just throw in all my chips on new components and F it up.

Thank you all for your input. Maybe when I actually do decide the operton six core CPUs will ahve dropped in price.
