First decent gaming build

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Just finished up university and looking to build my first decent computer since I will have some money for the first time in my life. For now I just want something that provides room for upgrade in the future such as adding an SSD, another video card, ect but also gives me some room for modest overclocking for now.

Case: HAF 932 Advanced
CPU: Intel Core i5-2550k
MoBo: Asus P8Z77-V Pro
Mem: Corsair Vengeance 8GV DDR3 1600 MHz (2 x 4GB)
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Video Card: ASUS GTX 570 1GB DirectCU II
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750M

Let me know if you see any areas of improvement or if anything here will cause me problems in the future or if there is anywhere to save a few dollars. I know the DirectCU II card takes up a lot of room but I have heard that it is extremely quiet and is really easy to OC.

Thanks

EVGA 570 will be easier to SLI with later on
post #3 of 66
Bump your gpu upto the gtx 580.. It will last longer before you have to upgrade. You can always go SLI too.

Everything else looks good and there is the obvious wait for new intel CPUs

SSD...i have 2 OCZ Agility 3 SSDs which i got my 120 for 102 after rebate and my 60gb for 59 after rebate. they are Sata III but the memory used is asynchronous memory and the random and sequential read speeds arent as fast as OCZ Vertex 3 which uses synchronous NAND instead. but im happy with the speeds i get i didnt want to spend all extra money for higher teir 1

Part list permalink / Part price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Microcenter)
Getting a 2550k make no sense if they overclock the same and the 2500k is cheaper; also no integrated graphics . I would probably wait for Ivy Bridge which is coming later this month and get a 3570k, around $220 and the successor to the 2500k.

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($22.99 @ NCIX US)
Best cooler in its price range. should get you around a 4.5 Ghz OC

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($147.86 @ Newegg)
Great price/performance motherboard. ASUS and ASRock have nice motherboards and OC well.

Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($44.99 @ Newegg)
G.Skill is a very reputable brand and is responsibly priced.

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Great 1TB drive, you don't need a black it's $20 more and you get 2yrs warranty more, by that time HDDs will be much cheaper.

Video Card: XFX Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card ($429.99 @ Microcenter)
Better then the 580 (Benchmarks) and the price will lower by tomorrow (Article). It's also on amds newer line of GPUs so as the drivers age you will most likely get better performance.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced ATX Full Tower Case ($119.99 @ Newegg)
You chose this one. I might check out the NZXT Phantom or the NZXT Switch

Power Supply: Rosewill 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($93.50 @ Newegg)
A 750w that's 80+ gold certified which basically means its more reliable and is better/ cheaper then the one you listed.

Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Cheap and does the job.

Total: $1157.29

If you plan on getting a SSD now get the Crucial M4 64GB. In the future there may be better price/performence wise but as of now the M4 takes the crown.

You can't use Virtu MVP or Quick Sync with the 2550k, plus they don't OC any better than 2500k. So, get the 2500k or even wait for the 3570k. Should be out in about a week or so.

this one, because evga 570 occupy only two slots, while asus 570 occupy 3 slots, if you will notice, some asus gtx 570 sags on the cantilever portion or free hang end where the pcie connectors are located, unless some support are provided like rigid backplate or gpu holder.

also add a ssd on the build for speedy response time

add a aftermarket heatsink for overclocking that cpu
