Testing my TEC (finally)

Thread Starter
Well about five months ago i bought some (cheap) peltier from Fry's Electronics.. turns out it's only 50W. Good thing I only paid $20 for it.

I decided to hook it up today. So i samwiched it in between two HSFs without thermal gunk (would have been a waste anyways).

I'm guessing at the temps, but even so they are not good:

Cold side's HSF: ~50F
Hot side's HSF: ~90F

It's siting on my desk, not really changing in temperature.

Is this normal temps for a TEC of that wattage? Where is the cheapest place to get a better one?

Thanks,
Monkey

EDIT:

Here is a pic of my testing setup:

Awesome. I just put mine together too. Im only waiting on the other peltier for the video card. I also ordered others to cool down the hot side of the primary ones. Ill update my buildlog in a day or so with all the progress (all of it actually, I got lazy on posting). Those temps seem ok if they are in degrees Fahrenheit. If not, go look for some cheap 40mm peltiers on ebay. Thats what I did and I couldn't be happier.

Keep us posted, and nice work for that setup even if they were overpriced and underpowered.

Yeah, i'm never going to be putting this on my computer... wouldnt do crap.

<sarcasm> Maybe I'll use it as a southbridge cooler!! </sarcsm>

I doubt it would even cool that, not that it gets hot lol.

My digital [meat] thermometer says about 43F(~6C) and steady.. thats pretty good.

But witha load on it, it wouldnt be that temperature.. it'd probly just explode.

most likely. i bought a 30w tec to play with. it had a heatsink already on it so i put the heatsink halfway in a cup of water and froze it. then wired it up... wow it formed frost on the cold side. try that.
