Recommend a lens for kids sport games

Thread Starter
I'm looking at getting a lens to take pictures of my 3 year old son at his t-ball games. I'll probably be shooting from 1st or 3rd base and maybe on my tripod or just free hand. I want to take pictures in burst when he's swinging a bat or throwing a ball.

I would like to keep this under $500 and sold by Amazon. It's easier to return if something is wrong. I started out with a budget in mind of around $200. But the more I looked and read into this I started to realize I'll probably need some extra features like IS and USM. Would like a 250mm or 300mm max as well.

I'll be using this on my Canon T3i.

I was looking at this one http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-300mm-4-5-6-Lens-Cameras/dp/B0007Y794O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334549219&sr=8-1 and then I see recommended http://www.amazon.com/Canon-75-300mm-4-5-6-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B00004THD0/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1334550251&sr=1-2 which is almost $300 cheaper but doesn't have IS or a USM.

Thanks

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - Your first link I believe? That lens kills the other one in all respects. Will suit your camera to as its not so large. If that is your budget then I'm not sure you can really get anything any different with any real gain.

At that range (assuming you will be using it @ closer to 300mm then 70mm) you will be using a 5.6 aperture value a lot so your shutter speed will drop kinda low if you are keeping low ISO values, and the IS will really help there. I would go for that IS/USM lens over the non version ANYDAY smile.gif

You won't find a better lens for the job unless you start looking at L glass, and double the price.

are you expecting the shot to be really tight on your son when he is at the plate? just to give you a point of reference on focal length a 400mm lens will reach about halfway across a soccer field and give you a semi tight shot on a professional soccer player.

while these lenses cover the focal lengths that you desire and are in the price range you want i highly suggest you do a little research and find out which one performs the best in servo mode so that you can ensure you get the best photos possible. im not 100% how these lenses perform at tracking a moving subject but i imagine you would want to try and get the most keepers possible.

a tip for shooting sports during the daylight to help you is shoot in shutter priority. set your ISO to about 500-800 since you have a slower lens. and set your shutter speed to 1/800 to start. that is an estimate based on settings i would get in daytime sports shooting. then take a test shot to see what your fstop number is and if its close to 5.6 your looking good. if its over f8 i suggest lowering the shutter speed to lower the fstop number to get a reasonable exposure. thats not the greatest advice but its simply just a starting point. those settings are not guaranteed to work but should be close to what you need.
