Doing some research for my technical writing class and was curious what everyone at OCN uses to run their NAS systems.

My research is mostly looking at FreeNAS vs unRAID but if you guys could also include any that you may have used that would be very helpful.

If you want to give feedback in the following format I'd appreciate it smile.gif

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2

Storage:
8 x 2TB (RAID 5) = 12.73TB (NAS Storage)
8 x 1TB (RAID 10) = 3.64 TB (VM Storage)

CPU: Intel i7-950

RAM: 24GB (6 x 4GB) GSkill Ripjaw X

Comments: I use this server as NAS Storage for my home and also as a Hyper-V server. Windows Server 2008 R2 works perfectly for my needs.

I selected other as I run vanilla FreeBSD (rather than FreeNAS) as I'm a UNIX administrator by trade. However I run ZFS and a number of other services that FreeNAS offers (albeit I installed and configured it manually), so for the sake of this research, you could count my vote against FreeNAS.

OS: FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE (GENERIC)
CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X3 720 Processor (2812.55-MHz K8-class CPU)
RAM: 8GB
HDD (boot): 80GB IDE - formated: UFS
HDD (storage): 6x 1TB SATAII - formatted: 1 ZFS pool (2x raidz1)
ZFS config:
Code:
  pool: zprimus
 state: ONLINE
config:

 NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
 zprimus ONLINE 0 0 0
   raidz1 ONLINE 0 0 0
     ad10 ONLINE 0 0 0
     ad14 ONLINE 0 0 0
     ad12 ONLINE 0 0 0
   raidz1 ONLINE 0 0 0
     ad2 ONLINE 0 0 0
     ad4 ONLINE 0 0 0
     ad6 ONLINE 0 0 0

Amazingly, even booting from IDE, the system flies. But then I guess most things of the OS is cached and all of the VMs I run are on the ZFS array, thus not bottle-necked by IDE.

I run Freenas, its awesome

OS: Freenas v8.04p1
Storage Amount:
5 x 3TB (zfs raidz) 10.8 TB of space
CPU: AMD E-350
RAM: 8GB 2x4

The sofware is great and really easy to setup.

Wanted to use volume level replication, iscsi, samba/nfs and consistent ACPI/suspend support.

OS: CentOS 6.2
Storage Amount: 2 servers with 1 TB (software raid 1)
CPU: AMD Athlon II x2 250u
RAM: 4 GB

System is small, but extremely automated via scripting. Works flawlessly,

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
Storage Amount: Just Under 2TB - RAID0
CPU: P4 531 @ 3.2ghz
RAM: 1gb (2*512mb DDR2-6400)
System: Heavily Modified Dell 3100c
Comments about your experience:
I know a full server install for a NAS system seems overkill, but I do use it as my torrent/backup/stats box so it does get some usage!

OS: CentOS 6 x64
Storage Amount: 6TB for LVM
CPU: Phenom 9550 2.2ghz quad
RAM: 6GB DDR2 800
System: Custom built from my old gaming comp
Comments about your experience:
Fairly easy setup with LVM to give me mirroring of important data on 2 LVM volumes. Note that this system also is my everything server (DHCP, DNS, Webserver, TS3 server, sabnzbd downloader, DVD ripper/encoder).
