AGP: 6600GT or 6800XT?

Thread Starter
My 6600GT died a while back, so i sent it in to eVGA for a repair. On that card, i had an overclock of 630/1125. The card had 128MB, 128-Mbit GDDR3 memory.

I just got the card back from RMA, and in the box was a 6800XT. It also has 128MB of RAM, but it's DDR1, 256-Mbit 700MHz DDR i believe.

Now, my questions:

1. Is this an upgrade or downgrade?

2. How do these cards compare at stock (both)?

3. If i OCed and/or unlocked this card to its max, would it be comparable to my old 6600GT?

Thanks.

Edit: I meant "bit" on the interface, not "Mbit"

I think it's sort of a side-grade. If you can manage to unlock the XT, I believe you could get it up to 6800 Vanilla levels, which would definently be an upgrade from a 6600GT.

Is the DDR vs DDR3--128-bit vs 256-bit gonna make either one of them have a bigger advantage? Cuz i had a 7600GS and i think it was the DDR2 memory vs the DDR3 memory on my 6600GT that made my 6600GT better.

6600GT faster? Thats laughable O_o.. They roughly equal each other though, you shouldnt notice a difference.

They look pretty similar in performance, the best way to tell would be to benchmark the new card and see if you get around the same performance.

6800XT DDR1? o.o 6800 are all DDR2 and mainly DDR3 and for 6800XT, you can unlock 8more pipes(i believe, because I have a 6800GT with 16pipes)

Yes, my 6600GT was faster (raw FPS). And between this 6800XT and 6600GT, i don't wanna open up the new one to benchmark incase i know for sure the 6800XT is at least comparable, cuz since it's still sealed i might sell it. And i'm not sure if this is the NV40 or NV41 core. It is, infact, DDR and not DDR2 or 3. That was my major concern.

seems to me ( i am a newb so) that the core is faster but the ram is slower and less in size dunno....... OC IT!!!!! and it should be back up to if not above par

The core is, indeed, a faster chip. I'm worried if the RAM is holding it back, though. Here's a link to the card i have.

Here's the 6600GT i used to have.

I agree totaly with that statement.

I had a 6600GT for several months that served me well, but due to an RMA nightmare I ended up with a 6800 Vanilla (DDR, 256-bit, 128mb). In raw FPS, the 6600GT was better, and scored better on some benchmarks too, but when you keep piling on the extras like AA and AF, the 6800 takes much less of a hit in FPS.

EDIT: I had the same 6600GT you do. It's a great little card, I have no complaints, but if your 6800XT is an NV40 (and thus you can unlock pipelines), I'd keep it.
