[Kotaku] Report:EA About to Let Go 500-1000 People - Page 2

Probably all tied to SWTOR in some manner.
EA has 8000 employees, this really isn't that major. EA cut 1500 employees back in '09 for example, and they had near 10,000 employees then.

When you're constantly acquiring new studios and IPs, you're going to have a higher than average worker churn.

I hope not a single one of these people belong to development teams.

Firing 1/8th of your workforce is a MASSIVE cut. It means either you're not profitable or you think you won't be very soon. You basically said they've cut 30% of their workforce over the last 3 years.

Uh, so? Get a new job, like everyone else. Or draw unemployment for doing diddly squat for 9-12 months.

If you suck at your job, you deserve to lose it. And I doubt many here would disagree that "EA" sucks at "their job." Gotta start cleaning out the closet SOMEWHERE.

Ignorance at its best. Have you ever held a real job? If you have you'd know that the ones who impact the quality of a product are NOT the same ones getting fired. You think the low level employees getting the pink slip are the same ones making decisions that impact anything?!

It's similar to how the US auto workers take all the slack for how the US auto industry put out horrible cars but no one stops to think that those low level workers had no CONTROL over what they were putting out, nor did they approve the designs for those terrible cars.

This. Most of these people were probably contracted for projects. Most of the video game industry works this way. You rarely have a job making games at one studio for your entire career (unless you make COD tongue.gif)

Yes its a far from nice thing to be made redundant but with the economies of the world still in turmoil, its not surprising really.
Anyone know the % of all staff this equates to?
A second point is (and I cant check the source to see if it states this) but a majority/minority/some/all of the 500-1000 could be temporary/contract workers whose contracts wont be renewed. Which is slightly different to have permanent staff leave.

About 8,000 as it says here https://jobs.ea.com/about/.

So I guess about 6 to 13%. Big deal if you ask me.

Stockholder says why make 500 million profit when you can make 550 million.

Also an easy way to get rid of dead weight, so they can hire new people next month.
