[MPC] Best Buy Releases the List of 50 Stores Being Closed Next Month - Page 5

Hmmm seems I will have to swing by the one in Loganville to see their closeout sales..... not that I am expecting many good deals.

Hope the employees being laid off get some compensation and are able to get new jobs

I'm a full time student who works 30-45 hours a week, so I know how hard it can be not having a job.

They do deserve better. A proper education will lead them to better things.

Excuse me... Im educated working and my parents are divorced (impossible to live with them both at the same time) I WOULD LOVE to move in with either of them. However, I think its a bit against etiquette protocol to ask your retired parents to take in their oldest son who typically works 18 to 40 hours straight.

I shop my local best but from time to time, it's how I got my sig laptop for 650 bucks.
Also, there's quite a few people who work in the computer department Who know what they are talking about. So I'm somewhat disappointed in best buys turn of business loss, I just know they could achieve in the market better overall, by hiring people who are educated in the department they are applying for and who know good customer service, and prices.

that would require professionalism, which in turn requires professional pay. Something best buy is not willing to do.

I for one welcome BB closing and hope more repair shops like mine open up.. I actually love what I do

While I agree that the mom&pop's would offer superior service (especially on repair work), individual small business retailers have a hard time competing on price and sometimes selection. Depending on your age, you may remember the plethora of independents in various retail sectors that were decimated by the "Big Box" retailers starting in the late 70's. It became worse with the advent of online shopping, except now companies like Amazon are hammering what is left of the independents, plus the "Big Boxers" who can't adapt quickly enough to the new business model.

Would you pick service over price? I think history supports price as the winner. A local paper ran a story, 10-15 years ago if memory serves me correctly, about a local retailer who lamented on competing with "Big Box" retailers. He offered exemplary service to his dwindling stream of customers, but after educating a prospective buyer on a product, they would often leave never to be seen again. At this point, he knew the savvy customer had used him for his product knowledge only to abandon him for the "Big Box" store's price. God how that must have sucked and he later went out of business after many years in the community.

There have been several comments in the thread concerning BB's pricing. I agree that they are higher than I choose to pay except on the rare occasion when I need an item immediately. But to me, the bigger issue facing Brick and Mortar retailers is the issue of tax. In Tennesse, we have no income tax, but our sales tax can vary from 7%-9.75%. Hmmm.....I can buy online from a huge volume retailer with no tax and free delivery like Amazon or I can purchase locally and pay a higher base price with tax. No wonder the Brick and Mortars are suffering. You know what other local things are suffering? Schools, infrastructure, police and fire protection, state-college tuition.....you name it. I only mention this because I think many online retailers enjoy an unfair advantage when it comes to taxation. And whether you realize it or not, you are paying for this advantage one way or another. For the record, most of my electronic purchases are from Newegg. They have a distribution center in Memphis and I have to pay tax, but I am willing to make the compromise (good price+tax) for what I have stated previously.

As for BB's service, I have experienced both excellent and atrocious service. There was no rhyme or reason to it. I hope they make it; we need the competition.

They're closing the one in Manteca,CA?? ? ? ? ? That store if I remember correctly is right off of a freeway, which is populated all the time since its used as a way to commute to the bay area/valley.
EDIT: I see why they're closing now, bad reviews all around when I looked:
Quote:
Geek Squad - Nice Folk, but Questionable Computer Skills adn Services I have gone to Geek Squad in Manteca a couple, maybe even a few times and I had never had a problem with them until now. They are nice individual people, but they're actual knowledge of computer science is doubtful. I can say the same for myself, I'm not a computer science major, but when I was notified that my product was done/repaired, I only received an email instead of a call. And when I went to pick up my product, it was returned to me in several pieces with the magnetic disk exposed to the open air. They were unsalvageable, but put it back together. Lesson learned: never got to Geek Squad for hardware problems. Thinking back on the times I've gone, they're services are overpriced. $100 for data back up? There's a site that offer data back up for $55/year! And I'm sure, there are small computer repair shops that offer cheaper prices and quality work.

I didn't say this was the case of everybody, but it is clear that a huge portion of OCN users are teenagers without any responsability who love telling how hard working people are lazy, and that finding a decent job is extremely easy.

I don't mean that as an insult mind you, it's just that teenagers/people still at school who have yet to experience more responsiblities can't possibly understand all the difficulties involved in later life and should refrain from the type of comment I was speaking of. There's nothing wrong with being young and leaving a mostly carefree life, more power to them.
