5970 gpu upgrade

Thread Starter
So tonight i went ahead an got 2 5970's. first off i know my psu wont handle both an my cpu will bottleneck both, but i will b replacing those shortly. was this a good decision i made? or should i just have went with another 6850 or something? i just want to make sure it wasnt a stupid move jumping back a series of cards. the whole reason for getting them is to upgrade my rig now, an turn it into a beast! an i feel like 2 5970's would b a good start to that. what do you all think?

QuadFire doesn't have the best scaling, but nontheless it is a huge improvement over a single 6850 in regards to pure GPU power. Also, you will be VRAM limited in games depending on your resolution. You are only going to have 1GB usable VRAM among your 4 monster GPU's.

I guess it depends on how much you paid for these things to say it was a good idea or not and what you plan to do with them gaming wise.

At 150 each that's not bad at all. You'll have a ton a GPU power so like you said you'll need a better CPU to push them. thumb.gif

There will be a few games to where VRAM will be a problem though if you want to max AA and stuff, since you only are gonna have 1GB usable.

Because that's all you have. 4 GPU's with 1GB on each GPU. It is mirrored across them all.

The cards are advertised as 2GB but they don't actually have that as usable VRAM. On one card you have 2 GPU's with 1GB each (so yes it's 2GB total.. but that's how they market it to sell). That 1GB is just mirrored in CFX between both GPU's on one card. The same thing happens with you have another 5970 in CFX.

End result = 1GB VRAM.

Same goes for cards like the 6990, 590, etc. They aren't 4GB and 3GB. They are 2GB mirrored and 1.5GB mirrored.

I would definitely cut that i7 920 out of the choice list unless you are on a budget. 2500K performs much better.

And yes 950W will be plenty, you'll be good. thumb.gif
