125W CPU on 95W Board?

Thread Starter
Ok so i have a Althon 64 X2 6400+ @3.2GHz and its a 125W Processor. its currently on a 95W board AsRock N68C-S UCC. I dont want my board to die on me, would underclocking help preserve my board? If so what speed should it be? I have it currently at 2.4Ghz
post #2 of 14
Inbefore XD...Yes you should underclock and undervolt it..2.4 should be OK..just undervolt as much as you can but keep it stable. You could go a little lower on the clocks, too

You really should look for an m3n78..

I'm honestly not sure if it'll even be an issue, considering its an old school K8 duallie.

Honestly, you're even lucky enough to have gotten 3.4GHz out of a K8. Those 6400+ chips were pretty well already at their max clock speeds out of the box.

EDIT:
My HTPC02 build has a 125w Athlon 64 x2 6000+ installed.....on a cheap OEM Gateway motherboard (which I'm sure is "technically" 65w or 95w rated). And its been going solid for YEARS.

Have you checked to see if Asrock has put out any BIOS updates for users that want to use a 125w CPU.

I would just save up $50 and get a Athlon II at 65w.

This.

Even a lowly new Sempron will outperform that old K8.
