Yeah, safe bet is to have 1mb/s UL for each player, so three servers wouldn't work very well on that home connection. COLO can be kind of pricy though, you almost might as well just rent out a dedi server. Three TF2 servers won't require the best of specs.

hmm, w/ a 2U rack drawing what, like 130 watts and requiring like 10 down and 30 up could you gustimate a per-month priceat your average colo? - Dedicated servers from hosting companies are ridiculously expensive- Also I like the flexibility of having my own hardware.

Colocation is not pricey, there's providers in Chicago that offer 100Mbps with 2000GB outbound metered only for about $65/month with a 2U slot. (Continuum Datacenter).

But yeah I agree, if you don't want to mess around with getting your server setup, shipped and installed, just rent a dedicated server.

Well I live right outside of philly- and 65 a month doesn't sound too bad. I'm wondering if I should shop around for someplace local, but even Atom dedi's are looking lik 99+ a month. Basically I can deal with settup and shipping. Now it's time to find the right place.

Yeah dedicated servers will run you a bit more money. I'll look around for you and see if I can get some quotes for a 2-4U server

Colocations can hurt if you need any support from them (example: turning the server back on after an oops). Usually in the range of $150/hr with a minimum time. IMO if you are willing to spend $65 bucks a month+ you should be able to get business class internet with a static IP. According to Verizons site, its $110 a month for 25/25, I figure you are already paying at least $40 for your current Fios.

You won't be hitting any bandwidth cap with 4 gameservers, I doubt you would even break 100GB a month. And generally business internet doesn't have caps, AND on top of that Fios shouldn't have caps.

Edit: I guess you can actually hit ~1TB a month on full TF2 server 24man.

While thats all fine and great, you need to figure in power, and service level. In a datacenter, most have 100% SLA's and some have 99.9% uptime. Residential power can't compete with 24/7 monitored, redundant power.

You will be paying far less for a colo'd server than you would by getting a business line, power, and physical security.

I will have to disagree with you on this one. This game server is not a mission critical service that needs redundant power and physical security. He is not a Game server provider that has clients.

Either he will have use his current hardware to build out a server in a purchased server chassis (most likely 2u to use a standard ATX power supply). Or, he will need to purchase a 1u server with similar specs for about $500-600 used.

Then he will need to find a colocation that offers good internet connection speed (Not just switch port speed). Server will also need adequate bandwidth and will likely be an additional expense based on the bandwidth requirements of the servers. And as I said early, if for some reason anything goes wrong, you will need hands on support. You could get a server with IPMI support (meaning bios level control remotely), but usually requires a dedicated LAN port. You would need to rent an additional switch port and possibly an IP. If any hardware failures occur, you will need to ship a replacement part to them and have them install (another cost), or go there your self if they allow access.

I believe he would have a VERY hard time finding all that for under $170 dollars a month. If you can find a data center that would meet all his requirements for cheaper, please post them here.

In short, check into business class internet for your house, it will be much easier and simpler for administration. Just grab a router, load DD-WRT on it, put the server on its own VLAN and be done with it.

Well since I do live in the city I could find a location closer to me (within a 1/2 hr drive) and not have to deal w/ settup or installation fees. In terms of redundancy I'd agree that's not necessary. I've been price checking some colos around me and here is the best deal/location I've found so far (in response to my inquery) : "We do have a 1U/2U package for $64.99/month that includes 1 amp and 1.5TB (100Mbps port)." I think that'd be plenty for me and I ould configure everything I need before sending it in. If I did need a replacement I wouldn't have an issue w/ a fee. My best option for business internet would be FiOS and thier business plans in my area with 25/25 start at 100+ BEFORE taxes/fees which add up to almost 400 with the router- and that isn't even a static ip mad.gif ... So I think, for my needs, colo is more cost effective.

Well it sounds like that is a fantastic deal! Just be sure to check all their fees, they may even charge for an escort to the rack.

If you don't already have a motherboard, I would suggest trying to get a micro-ATX board. Opens a lot more possibilities for server chassis. Also the power supply should be a front intake and rear exhaust design.

Other than that, just snag a case with tons of fast loud fans and have fun =)!
