Do MAC AMD cards work on PCs?

I'm in the market for a new HD 5870. I find a lot of the new cards on eBay are listed as "MAC" parts. Can those be used on PC?

I can't imagine why they wouldn't As long as they are PCI-E.

Yes indeed, Mac cards work just fine in PCs. They have non-standard Mac BIOSes/EFI firmware but the GPUs themselves are identical and will work with the standard AMD driver package for Windows.

So is there any downside to using a MAC card?

No they are the same as far as you are concerned. I can tell you I was able to use an 8800GT from a Mac in my PC just fine but could a retail "PC" card would not work in that same Mac. Not sure of the exact difference but you should be fine.

As long as the price isn't inflated just because they're "Mac compatible". Apple was charging $250 for 4870s back when they were $150 on Newegg.

Apart from the prices being typically higher than the equivalent PC card because LOLApple (here's one for $440! eek.gif) there aren't any that I'm aware of. If you can get one at a reasonable price it should be just fine.

The problem is finding a new card from a reliable source has proven to be quite difficult. If anyone knows a source please let me know!

Why are you looking for a 5870 specifically? There are better cards out now and especially since you're considering Mac cards, of which the prices are much higher than they should be, I would assume you can get something new that's better than a 5870. Ebay is acting up for me at the moment. What are new 5870s going for on there?
