[ZDnet] Windows Phone is great, so why aren't more people buying them? - Page 13

I love wp7 on the my lumina 710. I switched myself and the wife from i phones in an effort to cut the final ties with apple and am very happy about this particular switch.

My wife loves the big massive blocks much better, and everyone she shows it to agrees.

Unfortunately the stigma of the Windows name will keep many close minded toward this platform, but that is okay, msoft is a big enough company that if none of the iphone users in the world switch over, it could still be ludicrously profitable with the windows mobile platform.

Have you used Windows Phone 7 for an actual phone for more than a day or two? I'm not going to 'argue' about the merits of any of the platforms as they all have their place and they are all on relatively equal footing from a functionality and polish standpoint. Having discussed the platform with some of the main designers and learning what they were trying to achieve perhaps has allowed me to be a bit biased by being able to see them more readily but it is a great platform.
You are taking two angles that I have seen way too much. First is that Android (or even iOS in some cases) has so much more tweak-ability and options and so that by default makes them 'better'. That may be true in some cases but in others it is just silly. Second is the mentality that "I do things this way and so that is what all future changes should accommodate". This is not relegated to mobile devices and can be seen in any hardware or software change ever.
"Windows 7 sucks, I'm sticking with XP!"
"Ribbon interfaces are bloated."
"GUIs are just fluff."
"Where is X option or Y menu? It used to be here?"
That alone is a horrid way to judge a new device or platform. Rather than go into it expecting what you're used to, if you really want to give anything new a chance you have to remove those notions from your head. I am not saying it is a bad reason to dislike something but to use that as a point on why the platform is poor is flawed.

You have an extremely good point. If you go into a new platform without an open mind and expects everything to be the same as the old platform you are using, whats the point?

I wouldn't call it a stumbling block but it's happened with plenty of other carriers and devices before. Unless they specified that the phones would be receiving the updates and then backed out, I can't really see how this is an issue. Besides, the 'rebuttal' is only clearing up another unofficial source. The original statement was from a developer evangelist. It would be nice to see the phones get the update but if it doesn't happen oh well. I bought my phone for what it is, not what it might become.

It's funny how Android gets no official updates at all and you need to buy a new phone after 6 months, yet first WP gen devices have been supported for 1.5 years now, they all got NoDo, Mango and soon to get Tango.

Did iPhone 4 get Siri? No.

Tbh then why get a expensive smartphone? The battery is crap compared, its larger and much more expensive.

Not saying I dont like my Lumia 800, but if those are your only uses of a phone then you dont need it?

Oh, what to believe now...

Well, we have to wait for MS for the official word regarding the Apollo update.

And at least in Android, if the OEM/carrier doesn't want to release an update, you still can do it unofficially. And what's funny is that dev-made ROMs are much better than skinned firmware; see how CyanogenMod is spreading like wildfire for new and old devices alike.
