It depends on your computer. If everything works out of the box, it'll work amazingly. But if something doesn't, you at the very least require a lot of configuration to maybe get it to work.
Eh, my WiFi doesn't work out of the box but that's only Arch/Debian. Works fine OOTB in Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, etc. Most motherboards/laptops tend to use the same 3-4 different chipsets for Ethernet/WiFi/Whatever these days.
I can guarantee if they come out with a story saying the exact same thing about Android Jelly Bean or iOS 6, you'd believe it and post it any time someone says they don't like WP7.5/8.
Had HTC Dream on 1.1, OOTB there was an update for 1.5 and within ~6 months one for 1.6. I kept that phone for just over 2 years, then I got my SGSII. Went from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 official then put CM7 on it. My mothers HTC Desire started off on 2.1 (iirc) and got an update to 2.2 within 4 months, and an update to 2.3 not too long ago. As for the 6 month comment..Have you owned an Android device? You don't need to upgrade every time a new phone comes out.
Say that to my Aunts rooted SGSI, my mothers rooted HTC Desire (She did it herself too) and my friends rooted SGSII. My Aunt knows more about PCs than the average person, but not too much. Same story with my friend. He may know what a CPU or GPU is and how to install one but he doesn't get the specifics. (ie. Shaders, ROPs, etc)
It's not that hard, install Odin, boot into Download mode and press the right buttons on the program.
WP is sexy, but that's about all it has going for it IMO. Android is just as smooth, as is iOS, both have more/cheaper/better quality apps and (nearly) all the features can be put on either.

1.5 year old WP7s don't need WP8, for sure, but if i bought a brand new Lumia i'd be mighty pissed if it didn't get it.

This graph seems to disagree with you.

chart?&cht=p&chs=460x250&chd=t:0.3,0.7,6.0,23.1,0.5,63.2,0.1,1.0,2.2,0.5,2.4&chl=Android%201.5|Android%201.6|Android%202.1|Android%202.2|Android%202.3|Android%202.3.3|Android%203.0|Android%203.1|Android%203.2|Android%204.0|Android%204.0.3&chco=c4df9b,6fad0c

Look at that graph in 2 or 3 months. It'll be vastly different. OTAs for 4.0 haven't started yet for anyone in the US, but they're about to. Once the RAZRs, SGS2s, and HTC phones get their ICS, it'll be a different story.

You don't need a smartphone if that's all you do with your phone.

A Blackberry phone or some other keyboard phone would suit your needs. (And depending on the model you choose, maybe even for a fraction of the price.)

I got 4.0.4 ICS OTA for my Nexus S. They have begun, on a select amount of devices. It's usually the service provider that's holding back updates.

I haven't played with WP7 yet so I cant comment on that, but I FREAKING LOVE ANDROID! So untill I hear some crazy stuff about WP7, ill just stick to ICS.

BTW, bing a Open OS, Android custom Roms can be released by people like CyanogenMod. I don't Expect to see people making custom versions of WP7 wink.gif

This is how it is now, all your do is speculate smile.gif

You mean like all the speculation as to WP8 on current devices? No-one knows for sure and MS hasn't said anything definite yet.

How is this even related to what I said? You are just attacking me instead of accepting the truth.

You said all we can do is speculate on how many devices ICS will get, or at least that's the impression I got. The same applies to WP8.

IT would cost me more than a contract to switch. I have 80 apps on my Android phone, around 30 are paid for. I don't feel like spending a further £30-50 buying similar apps. Whereas when I move Android phones (Android to Android) they come with me.

WP7 may be good but it's not that good that I'm going to drop my account.
