Would this be able to run Diablo III on highest settings?

Hi!


I'm about to build a budget PC for a friend's friend.

Now originally I wanted to do an i5-2500k build, but that goes too much over budget, so I probably have to go AMD.

Would a Phenom II X4 and a Radeon HD 6850 1 Gb. be able to max Diablo III on 1680x1050 or 1920x1080 res?


I will push to get the i5-2500k build (w/ a 6850), but it's gonna be more expensive, and he probably doesn't want that....



Anyway, what would you think? smile.gif

I'm pretty sure it will. Blizzard games are usually more CPU heavy than GPU heavy, but I think you'll be okay.

That is correct, but that Phenom should be just fine for Diablo3. Blizzard games are not only CPU heavy, but due to lengthy development process, you can usually get away with older hardware.
Although if you're starting from scratch, you can grab something like 2100 for very similar price as the Ph-2

Well I can say that the i5-2500k would obviously perform better, but you might not even notice it at all. Its been said that if you can run Starcraft 2 on max settings then you can run Diablo 3 on max. Starcraft 2 requires much more CPU though for those big battles with lots of units on screen.

I'm sure you'll be more than fine with what you have. If not, you can always upgrade after the game comes out.

It's not for me. My system can definitely run Diablo III, no doubt about that biggrin.gif But it's for a friend of a friend of mine... And I really wish to make it a great PC, so he'll be able to pass it on smile.gif I'm trying to establish a bit of a hobby business besides school smile.gif

What about a FX-4100?

No. Stay away from BD chips. Their single core performance is worse than Phenom2's, and most people wont classify them as true 4 core chips either.

If you are on a budget, i3-2100 is the best bang for the buck chip on the market.. You can't just say "oh, it's a dual core". It's a sandy bridge based dual core. It's an EXCELLENT chip.

I have the DIII Beta and I will say, although the information is out there, DIII is NOT a CPU tank like world of warcraft.

You will need a decent GPU to play with good frames. The graphics engine is still pretty crappy, but I think your best bet is to get the I5-2500k, it is a substantial upgrade for $80. From the overclocking head room later on, to the performance now, I would spend the money on the CPU now.

The Phenom II should be able to play it on high settings, but I'm afraid you will not have 60+fps, diffidently not during AOE.

I was running 2 GTX 570's in SLI while testing, and still didn't get 60+ while in AOE packs, it was very sad times to see them release another game that can not utilize the powerful hardware that is available on todays market.

If you are on a budget, i3-2100 is the best bang for the buck chip on the market.. You can't just say "oh, it's a dual core". It's a sandy bridge based dual core. It's an EXCELLENT chip.

Yeah, well, I will go quad core. I don't like to use a dual core in these times wink.gif It's much better, and for lack of a better word "future proof".

I'll stay away from BD chips. I knew they were bad, but, you know, could've been a good one smile.gif

So it'll be either an i5-2500k or a Phenom II X4...

The Phenom II should be able to play it on high settings, but I'm afraid you will not have 60+fps, diffidently not during AOE.
I was running 2 GTX 570's in SLI while testing, and still didn't get 60+ while in AOE packs, it was very sad times to see them release another game that can not utilize the powerful hardware that is available on todays market.

Well, you make a point. Although, 60+ FPS is not required, the i5-2500k does seem to be the better choice... Too bad it's so expensive here. I don't think overclocking will ever come into consideration with this guy. He has no knowledge of PCs what so ever. He's your typical "I-don't-need-to-know-what-it-can-do-as-long-as-I-can-play-my-games" kinda guy wink.gif
