Mm.amd might look less stellar on cpu front but remember this .amd hast put fusion on its stuff for sheer fun.amd and ati are almost ready to lunch trinity.and in case any forgot ati is still the brain behind this and preview showed that intel ivy bridge couldnt hope to keep up.and add the opencl acceleration (wich we can all thank tomhardware cause it seem they werent willing to speak till end the yeaor possibly 2013.so i dont know what ati is cooking but i bet opposition wont like it on the ultra portable world or tablet.

Short answer: no

Long answer: Who would buy SNB-E if people bought a cheaper CPU? Adding another $100 would mean losing much more on lost sales of higher margin parts.

And you have to look at the thing that the benchmarks DON'T tell you when you test the IGP on SB and I'm sure it won't be much better on IB. Intel is actually cutting corners to get the framerates they are getting on the HD 2000/3000. There's a great article I'll try and find it. Someone posted a link to it in another thread on here. The image quality of the SB IGP can't even match the old x1900 series from years ago.

edit - I should clarify....by image quality I mean in rendering. Things like mipmaps, tesselation etc.

That way... If yields weren't that favorable they could still disable two cores and sell them as quads.
Some might say it would ruin Gulftown sales... Probably, but keep in mind that the desktop version of GT is sold as hex-core when the die natively has eight cores.
Intel at this point could just release an oct-core version of Gulftown.

Anyway... I'm just dreaming it would seem.

Gulftown is on an old -albeit still very viable- socket. The sales are already declining.

They want you to pay the price premium for X79 boards. We will continue to only see at most 4 cores on the mainstream desktop segment until at least Haswell. And even then, Haswell will probably still max out at 4 cores, due to the majority of users barely needing more than 2 fast ones. Those who really want/need 6 cores will pay the extra premium for the enthusiast line.

A 6-core IB will be in direct competition to SB-E at all levels, from the 3820 to the 3960x. Intel does not want that, they want the price premiums they currently charge for SB-E.

Also, as said, you should be thinking about SB-E, not Gulftown. Gulftown is already EOL, Intel doesn't care about those anymore.
