HD 7950 3D?

Thread Starter
How do the new high end HD79xx serious cards handle 3D?

Is it done via software or at a hardware level?

Need a gfx card, the gtx680 is too inflated in price here, I can get a 7970 cheaper than a gtx680 here.

But I'm never going to use eyefinity but will however be wanting to watch movies and play games in 3D. thumb.gif

If you are serious about 3D stick to Nvidia. Its works the same way just that Nvidia does the software and hardware intergration while AMD does none of those. You have to do it urself with 3rd party software and hardware.

I can't speak on the effectiveness, but take any game performance, cut it in half, and that's what you'll get while using 3D.

I can understand that but all 3D is at only 1080p... these cards should be able to handle that and still get above 30fps on high/ultra settings.

AMD HD3D here and runs perfect, crossfire in my 6990 runs perfect.

I have installed TRIDEF drivers, TRIDEF have better 3D quality than Nvidia 3D Vision, but slightly worse support.

Bad news is TRIDEF is a payment service thumb.gif

right, and if not just bump the pretties down a tad.

If your using a 3D "TV" then yes, 30fps(60fps) per eye is all you "need". I would prefer at least 60fps(120fps) per eye, which can't really be done on many TVs. The 120fps is a little harder to achieve on a single card with "high/ultra" settings. Need at least 2 cards for the most recent games.

A 120hz monitor would be needed with good response times to limit ghosting while using 3D.

I can not watch 3D personally, it hurts my eyes, gives me a headache, and makes me nauseated, but have fun!

I am also looking at upgrading video cards so that I can enjoy 3D gaming. I understand with AMD you need 3rd party driver that you must pay for in the form of Tridef or IZ3D. But further investigation into nvidia shows that unless you purchase an Nvidia 3D vision package, you must also pay for the drivers to enjoy 3D on your home television. Its Called 3DTV play. If I am under the wrong impression someone inform me.

On the subject of the topic how will a 7950 fair? With the price drop would not be bad to pick one up. If not I am still deciding between a 680 or a 7970 as soon as more stock comes in on both. ( I prefer MSI lighting variants but cant find any in stock for either). Any suggestions would be welcome.

Edit: After some further reading I found an article with the following
"Why not use a 120 Hz LCD TV and the 3D Vision glasses in a theater room? According to Nvidia, none of them include the dual-link DVI inputs needed for 120 Hz, and their HDMI ports only accept a 60 Hz signal"
How will this affect the 3D and the gaming performance. I am not looking to play online in 3D only to enjoy good single player games on my home theater and switch back to monitors for multiplayer.

The bolded part is true. How if affects the 3D "performance is up to your eyes". I don't enjoy 3D in the least, but it might be because I haven't seen a 120hz monitor using 3D yet.

As long as your rig can handle 3d, you should be fine.

I played CoD:BO on a 90" 3D projector, it was nuts. I had to re-learn how to play practically. Played until my eyes hurt too bad to keep playing because it was so cool.

So after a couple of days of pondering I looked in 3D gaming monitors and am looking at this particular model. The SAMSUNG S27A950D . I keep hearing that after playing 2D at 120HZ u never go back kind of like SSD's. Anyone have any other recomendations or experience with this monitor. I saw the competing asus Nvidia surround 2 for the same price but decided I most likely want the 7970.

Thats a good monitor, I would go with the A850 personally because I don't like the "assymetrical" look.

Asus makes some really good 120hz monitors, too!
