Need help oc's my q660

Can someone help?

i set it to 9x but it would only go to 6x

I followed a guide on you tube and i keep getting a safe mode error. I think i got the fsb frequency screwed up.

It works other then the safemode error @ boot.

You need to go into your BIOS and turn off Intel Speed Step or EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology). This is what's causing your multi to lower to x6 when idling or not doing anyting CPU intensive (power saving feature).

Based on the screenshot on the link, the FSB is correct at 1066Mhz (bus speed x # of cores / 266 x 4); that's the stock FSB of the Q6600.

Also start off by setting your Vcore to a reasonable 1.34v (the higest vid for the Q6600 I think is 1.325v so you can even set it that low) instead of 1.416v you have it set to. I'm assuming you have an after market cooler on your rig?

Let's star here first before you even try to OC anything.

Come back here once you've removed the EIST as mentioned above and you should see the multi stay at x9.

Oh yeah, if you could, reset everything to stock first then disable EIST and set your vcore voltage manually.

It would be nice if you could reset everything first then go to this BIOS page:

http://www.realworldgamer.com/images/reviews/PC/Hardware/Motherboards/EVGA_680i_LT/evga_680i_lt_025t.jpg

Ensure that everything is set to disable except the cores of course (all cores should be enabled). Specifically we want the C1E and Intel Speed Step disabled to ensure stability when OCing and ensure that the multi doesn't go below the x9.

Also make sure the spread spectrum settings are all disabled:

http://www.realworldgamer.com/images/reviews/PC/Hardware/Motherboards/EVGA_680i_LT/evga_680i_lt_019t.jpg

This will also aid in making sure that you OC is more stable. If you look at the pic in the link this is what your Q6600 should be set at. The CPu frequency is at 2400 while the FSB referenceclock should be at 1066. The rest should be left as is as well.

Once you've set this, ensure that you set your multi to x9 and vcore to 1.34v then save and exit. Reboot and see what happens.

EDIT: I'm hoping the BIOS pics I pulled up are the same for the XFX board you have?

Will do when i get home from work. I should have done this many years ago when i first bought it back in 08 i think. It runs so much smoother when you overclock. For some reason i thought you needed more then just and aftermarket fan to overclock. I bought an i7 but sold it for a tiny profit when i found out the ivy bridge was coming out and that it wasn't that much of a upgrade from my quad.

I just want this to last until i get an ivy bridge.
