DD-WRT what is the point?

Thread Starter
Hi everybody!

I am currently using a Netgear WNDR3700v2 (aka RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N), and I have been hearing about a lot of people using DD-WRT on it and other routers.

So my question is, what is the point of using it? Are there any performance or security benefits?
I am a sucker for both performance and security, and I do not like anything that tracks what I use on the internet, anti P2P groups or ads.

I do not wish to have something that destroys my gaming experience or giving me higher ping of any sort.

So, can this add security and/or performance benefits for me that already uses PeerBlock, Security essentials, Ghostery and Ad blocker?
PeerBlock is not set up to do anything with my internet browser, since I have not found out how to make it work properly without it blocking absolutely everything.
The router itself is set up normally without any added "ban lists" for IP's and addresses.

Thanks for any help, and good answers will be rewarded as always smile.gif

It basically opens up ALOT more options that are on higher end routers that cost alot more. I used it on my WRT54GS routers and never had a problem with the firmware messing with my ping or gaming experience. In fact it actually opened up settings for traffic shaping that helps reduce lag and ping.

I use Tomato on my WRT54G-

No more dropped connections & more options-

Thanks for your reply!

So for my router that I would count as a "high end" router will it be any point doing it?
Just wondering, can you get lower ping with the right settings on a router or will always direct from modem be the best no matter what?

EDIT: Last questions sounds kinda stupid, but still wondering.

Nice, could perhaps be good for my wireless stuff then!

I have a Linksys which i used about 1 year. It would drop connection 1-2 times a day. Got DD-WRT and has not dropped it since. Also like how it monitors your Download/Upload Progress.

As stated, there are a lot more features than in most firmwares.

I like the one where you can put your router's wifi into 'Client' mode to authenticate with another wifi network. The router treats this as a WAN interface so you even have the SPI firewall as well.

Here's a good feature matrix highlighting what comes with each version:
