Got my AKG Q701's, now which amp to go with...?

Hey guys,

Wondering if someone who owns K/Q 701s or 702's could chime in with a recommended amp. I dont have a huge budget but I have been looking at the Little Dot MKV, the Matrix M cube, Lehman Audio Rhinelander.

I want to make sure whatever I get drives the cans as well as possible. I dont need an inbuilt DAC so that isnt my bottom line at the moment, more the quality of the amplification.

Hope someone can help!

O2 Amp. End of thread. (Figure of speech, y'know, I can actually make it 'end of thread' as editor tongue.gif)
The O2 is great but I would much rather have those monitor headphones on a tube amp. Its really a matter of opinion of course. I would say go for the little dot MK V, hard to beat at that price point. As for portable amps, I like the FiiO E11 for the bass boost which sounds great on the Q701s.

I can use my sound card to get a bit of base boost from the headphones I'd say.

The Little Dot is looking pretty attractive!

The E9 does a find job, that is what i'm using and have been impress. I have tried amp up to $1000 and could hardly notice the different. Yes they do sound better but not much better.

If you can afford it, I would get the little dot mk IV over the MKV, I loved my buddies tube amp for my Q701s over my e11 on my Xonar ST.

Is there much upkeep with tube amps? How often do you have to replace tubes?

Throwing another into the mix as I can get it for a good price - Lehmann Audio Rhinelander. Anyone have any experience with this amp over the others mentioned?

I personally listened to q701s through it and they sounded amazing! I then immediately plugged them into a project headbox and the sound difference between the two was pretty noticeable (the Lehmann sounded superior).

No upkeep, some last 20 years some last 10 years, either way you can replace amps if they die, which they probably wont and you can also swap them out with different amps for different sound signatures.

I cant help you with the Lehmann amp, I have never heard it before. You could check head-fi.org and see if there are some reviews there for ya.

The Little Dot never gave me the tube sound I found in more expensive tube amps and I never found it worth it's price. Might as well go with a solid state amp unless you're willing to drop over 300 dollars easy.

I really think it depends on the headphone, I agree with you to some extent. With my D2000s I didn't see as much of a difference but with my Q701s I saw more of a difference, maybe the higher impedance or the fact that they pick up on everything.
