RAID 10 X79 vs X58 Server - RAID 10 performance difference???

Hi,

Im building a medium server for my new company and am really torn on what platform to go for. On the one hand, you have proper fully fledged server, but 2011 is not available yet in South Africa, so its 1366, on the other hand, desktop 2011 is fairly widely available, and the same price as 1366.

Problem is that i will be running about 3 Virtual PC's to begin with, 1 or 2 to come, and will only have 1 Server Enterprise license so ideally i want the biggest best single CPU setup, which is looking like a 3930K, as it also gives me some headroom for later on.

Now my question is, i am planning on running 4 x 1TB 7200RPM SATA drives in RAID 10 and am wondering what the performance difference will be with the different RAID controllers. Server always have superior controllers, but is the outdated 1366 controller going to be faster (and if so by how much) than the brand new x79 controller for running RAID 10???

Also might get a 60GB SSD for caching if i go X79.

Thanks

X58 and 1366 is hardly a server chipset, but depending on your VM size, and since you are using X58 or X59, on top of it all, you are going to be using 7200 SATA drives, this is going to really hamper productivity I think... a SSD would benefit a lot from this scenario. It's cheap and cost effective and your VM's will load a lot faster..

Use your Raid for backups or storage, I have a 256GB M4 for loading Win Server 2003 + 3 VMs, my old setup was a C2D with 7200 drives, the VM's was slow, everything I did, I was waiting for the HD to catch up.. It was just a nightmare...

I use to think... "Buy a real server with 15K SAS drives and use Raid 10/5 and load your VMs on there, or get a SSD... ", but even the SAN Storage guys in my office are now moving all the VM's onto SSD arrays.. so that's gotta count for something. biggrin.gif
