OCing the CPU is not needed to fold, but you will increase your points per day if you do.
I haven't OC'ed on an INTEL mobo before but your CPU is fairly easy to OC, and scales really well.
there are great guides to OC'ing the X58 platform just GOOGLE around a bit

I don't literally intend to oc my cpu but some people said that the problem is with my vcore :S
The only thing I ocd is my RAM, I set it to run at 1600mhz according the ram's specs and the voltage is 1.63v

It was at 5.9 GHz at 1.7 V before? What about since then? Even if that was two years ago, you could be experiencing lingering degradation effects.

If it's BSOD'ing at stock, then you need to sort that out before OC'ing again. As juano recommended, try running some stability tests like Prime95 Blend. When you start up the program, select "Blend" in the dialog box and run it. If there is no dialog box, go to Options > Torture test. The longer you run it, the more you can be sure that your computer is stable. A few hours would be a bare minimum for folding stability, and more than a day would be preferable. There are of course other stress testing programs (such as Intel Burn Test, Linx, and HCI Memtest) that test the hardware in different ways, so it's also beneficial to test stability with a variety of programs beyond just Prime95 (though it's a good place to start).

If you get any BSOD's (especially 124 or 101) during a stress test, then it definitely won't be stable for folding. Folding is particularly unforgiving of instability (even though the core temperatures may not be as high). You may even not notice that there are any problems, and yet there may be silent data corruption occurring. You may not find out that there was a problem until after you submit the results of the unit back to the Stanford servers (the results are rejected and no points are awarded). This means it's highly recommended to test for stability before folding to avoid losing points and hindering the project.

Anyway, If you continue to have trouble with instability, post an inquiry in the Intel CPU subforum. You might get more specific 980x and x58 related help there.

That sounds horrible, I mean damn that is exactly what I've been worrying about since the day I bought this chip off a friend, he was a pro overclocker, he's the one who once cranked this chip up to 5.9ghz and he even said that he hasn't pushed it to its limit yet. He said that the chip is all fine but the IHS, the IHS has a circle in it from a round heatsink being mounted. Is there a chance it will cure itself?
what if I try reseating everything?

here are some photos of my BIOS config:
b-1.jpg

As we can see above, the cpu is untouched.

a-2.jpg

I adjusted the RAM's specs to the advertised specs
http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Blackline/998681.aspx
But I also adjusted the uncore speed without bumping the uncore voltage(because some people told me that I don't need to)

anything seem wrong?

Since you are overclocking the uncore you should probably increase the QPI/Uncore voltage. I'm no expert on x58 overclocking, but by searching around it seems that up to 1.35 V is considered safe (look around at some x58 overclocking guides to be sure). This is most likely the cause of your 0x124 BSOD.

You could also try reducing the Processor Vdroop setting. Your Vcore may be dropping too much under load causing it to BSOD. This is much less likely to be the cause of your BSOD since the CPU multiplier is at stock, but it's something else to try if the QPI/Uncore voltage increase doesn't work. A small increase in the Vcore setting may help too, but it shouldn't be necessary with a stock multiplier.

Last night(around 10PM) I tried to run prime blend with this setting:

Proc: 3.73Ghz (x27,x27,x27,x27,x28,x28)
V-droop: Mid V-droop
Voltage: all default

RAM: same as previous setting(in pic above)

And then in the morning I got this:
IMG-20120419-00038.jpg
It's the same 0x124 bsod but with different code in brackets

rant.jpg
in view event logs(windows), it's reported that the BSOD occured around 8:08AM

any clue? thoughts?

Did your friend maybe damage the chip at 5.9GHz with a ton of voltage? Eventually it will hurt it.
