I installed an OS to my laptop through an external USB CD Drive so you should be ok.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

Anyone knows if there's any problem with running 2 DIMMs instead of 4 with the x79? I think I've read somewhere that it can run dual, tri and quad channel with 2, 3 and 4 DIMMs but I'm not sure

And what about the cooler?

I run a corsair h100 on mine. Currently at a overclock of 4.6ghz @ 1.315v with max temps in prime at 76.

So I would say something like the h100 is the very MINIMUM you want to get if you plan on overclocking. Something with at least a double rad. These chips put out a lot of heat especially when you throw in a overclock into the mix. Your best bet is a custom loop though. Will keep it much colder than anything prefilled. Wish that's what I would have done, but my h100 defiantly works fine. Just not keeping temps quite as low as I hopped.

Then again, this is a beastly cpu so this h100 is still dissipating a lot of heat, again probably the best out of any prefilled loop.

As for the ram, you should be okay. I am running 4x4gb of ddr3 @ dual channel, so I am assuming 2 sticks should work fine in dual channel alone.
