So I have a bit of an issue, I had to RMA my Sapphire 5850 Xtreme 1GB card because something blew on it during a past BOINC Gone Bonkers and now I'm told the card needs an entire replacement. So I have a choice of either waiting for a new 5850 Xtreme to come in from the manufacturer or I could get a Sapphire 6950 1GB card as a replacement but the issue is that the 6950 has fewer "Stream Processors" than the 5850. I do some gaming but I usually use my cards for BOINC and the project I run needs all the Stream Processors it can get plus the 5850 was in Crossfire with another 5850. Would really like a single card solution to cut down on heat but still need that power. So I come to you in hopes of guidance on this matter, WHAT SHOULD I DO? confused.gif

Request 6950, sell for a quick $200, buy new 5850 or even 5870, relax and BOINC with some extra cash

Go with the 6950. Without a single doubt.

Better D11 performance. Huge tessellation improvement over 5850.

Maybe unlockable.

Heat, schmeat. You want the powah! We all know that's what it's all about, powah! Get the 5850. You even said you like to do BOINC more than gaming anyway, and crossfire 5850's will still kick ass for your casual gaming.

What's BOINC all about anyways? I've got 3200 stream processors at my disposal.

I'm wondering if I could sell both the 6950 and the other 5850 to get enough for a 7950 but guessing that would be a little out of reach, right?
Get the HD 6950, sell it, and then buy HD 5850 with cash leftover, perhaps you can get a second HD 5850 and crossfire...

You've got nothing to lose.

BOINC is a Distributed Computer program that basically links your computer into a network of other computers to form a supercomputer. BOINC is used by different projects for many different subjects dealing with everything from solving the Collatz Conjecture in mathematics to generating rainbow tables for testing against brute-force attacks in computer security. We have a team for BOINC and you get to choose how your processing power is used by picking which projects you think are interesting or which ones will get you the most points to add a competitive edge to the program.

Also the heat is what killed my card last time. Stock everything so as not to fry the warranty and I was hitting 81c+ sad-smiley-002.gif so heat is kinda a big deal.
I think you mean VLIW5 vs VLIW4 right? VLIW5 like on the 58xx series does faster than 69xx series (VLIW4) on Collatz due to an extra stage.
