simple as that i want something to just watch movies to. hate using tv audio as it sucks and the speakers i have right now, suck even more. i wouldnt say its really for music as i dont like anything too loud and prefer headphones for that but for something more movie specified or gaming when i dont feel like soundwhoring.

Audiophile perspective suggests craigslist or ebay.

I got my Klipsch Promedia 2.1s for $80 with a small bit of haggling IIRC.

Just look for newer Klipsch or M-Audio speakers and check out the Amazon reviews and you had might find something that suits your fancy. Since it's craiglist that'd probably be a bit easier than listing specific models since there is such a limited variety.

If you get really desperate you could eventually just go with a higher-end Logitech set.

the real audiophile scoffs at your tiny budget.

though im not one of those guys, so I am going to recommend a looking for something used that was high end a while ago....its amazing how much value things lose once they arent "new" anymore.

EDIT:

if you want something that really sounds the best I would get a pair of headphones for $85....that amount of money is not going to get you far for actual speakers unless you are skillful enough to build a set from plans you find on the internet.

If you decide to go with the Promedia's try to get the newer revision because while they sound the same AFAIK the subwoofer runs much cooler on the newer revision.

And going off a ton of reviews and some advice of a friend acquaintance the Promedia's 'sound' better while the AV-40s are better at sound production.

Should try to get a cheap t-amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers. You would get more out of your money.
