I really don't need the full terabyte for storage because I also have a 256gb SSD. The 750GB SSD/HD hybrid was getting better reviews than the Caviar black. My main buying point here is reliability. I don't want to deal with a dead drive after a few weeks of usage.

I already have a 2.5 mount for my desktop so that won't be a problem and 750gb would be more than enough space for me. What do you guys think? Any other recommendations would be great.

Momentus XT all the way! I love 'em. I'm using the 750GB model in my girlfriend's ITX PC and it's been rock solid for a few months so far. It sports a 5-year warranty and itt'll run more quietly than the Caviar Black, too.

It's for storage? I'd probably go for the WD 1TB Black.

Those Momentus XTs are great in single-bay laptops where you can't have both an SSD and regular drive... but in a desktop it's a harder decision. Some of the cache in the 750GB model is reserved for OS/Programs, and won't benefit you at all as a storage drive. It has lower sequential performance and higher seek times than the 3.5" Black, so when data isn't cached it's not going to be as fast. Ultimately it's how slow a drive can be that determines how slow it feels - not how fast. To put it in terms most people can understand (Videocards!), you notice stutters more than high max framerates. Being based off a laptop drive, it will have more slow moments when dealing with lots of data in random/unpredictable patterns.

Actually, continuing with that videocard analogy.... you could say the Momentus XT has 250 max fps, 50 avg, 20 min. The WD 1TB Black would be more like 80 max, 60 avg, 30 min.

The Momentus XT does have noise levels on its side, but it doesn't have price on its side. The 500GB model also had a shaky launch (lots of firmware and reliability issues), but I haven't kept up on whether the 750GB Gen2 has had similar issues. Neither model has been around as long as 1TB Blacks - not long enough to say how reliability will be. (Except that they will probably last over two years - but the Black might last 10 years, so... again, I can't say which is more reliable.)

I have the FAEX Caviar Black you linked and it is a great drive. If you are just using it for storage there really is no benefit to the Momentus's SSD cache. That will only help if you use it as a boot drive.(Since you have an SSD I am assuming you will not)

I love the Momentus XT, both as a laptop drive and as a boot drive for a desktop with no SSD installed. But if you already have an SSD and boot from it, there's no benefit to the XT as a storage-only solution. If I was buying for storage, I'd just pick up the cheapest terabyte drive out there and install it.
